E & M's in the rocks, Sydney
Tasted Sunday, June 18, 2023 by chatters with 133 views
Daniel was up from Melbourne so, as always, it was off to E&M's for supper. Roast Chicken was the basis for supper so I brought along a couple of Burgundies and we looked forward to a splendid evening...
An incredible evening of ruined wines! Incredible!!
2022 Logan Wines Riesling
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
A little lime, slightly dilute, this all translates to the palate which proves to be bone dry, lime driven and simple.

2016 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
A little kerosene, crystallised lime, smidge of honey, smells quite concentrated after the Logan. And so it proves on the palate; medium plus intensity acidity and the flavours from the nose, quite almost rich. Long.

2007 Bindi Chardonnay Quartz Flawed
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Macedon Ranges
Lots of bruised apple, a little marzipan, a touch sharp on the palate. Very oxidised. FLAW

2014 Domaine Robert-Denogent Pouilly-Fuissé Les Carrons Flawed
France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
And, like the Bindi, this proves to be mover about bruised apples with a touch of almond paste on both the nose and palate, quite flat, quite prematurely oxidised. FLAW

2011 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
After the first two Chardonnays this proved a revelation! Stone fruit, a little butter, sweet spice, fresh citrus underpin, tiny honeyed notes. Equally fresh and vibrant in the mouth. Yum.

2015 William Downie Pinot Noir Yarra Valley Flawed
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
From half bottle. Some whole bunchy notes and pretty fruit is marred by a fair lick of volatility and wood glue. The latter of these components rather dominate the palate. FLAW.

2014 William Downie Pinot Noir Gippsland Flawed
Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
From half bottle. Soupy, thick, volatile. In the mouth it's equally unpleasant with an additional nasty petillance note. I suspect it was bottled before finishing malolactic. Ugh. FLAW

2015 William Downie Pinot Noir Gippsland Flawed
Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
From half bottle. Like the 2014 this also proves thick, sludgy and soupy. Volatile notes compete with wood glue on the nose. It didn't make to the mouth. FLAW.

2009 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints Flawed
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Very Bretty on the nose; slurry, horseshit, and these notes also dominate the palate. Undrinkable unless you’re a masochist. FLAW

2008 Domaine Aleth Girardin Pommard 1er Cru Les Charmots Flawed
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
I had high hopes for this despite it's relative descent last time I tried this about three months ago. Alas it has fallen off a cliff and has a disjointed mess, jarring, flat, done. FLAW

2007 William Downie Pinot Noir Yarra Valley Flawed
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
This was approached with considerable trepidation. On opening it proved itself charming, whole bunchy Pinot. Fresh acidity, lightweight, red over black berry fruits, a little textured burr. And, of course, a touch of wood glue. Over time (less than 30 minutes) it just fell apart, the wood glue note just too over and, like so many wines tonight, it became undrinkable. FLAW.

2015 Rockford Shiraz Basket Press
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
From half bottle. A safe bet. Plenty of ripe dark fruit married to aa fair lick of oak offering aa little sweet spice, vanilla, Even from half bottle this is showing as quite primary though the palate is balanced in a shouty way. I think we were all just happy it wasn't flawed.
