France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Initially had a touch of heat on the nose and palate suggesting a very mild maderization to the wine - either my senses betrayed me or this blew off over some time. Very fine and put together. Levity and elegance seem to define the younger Meo wines of the evening. Not overbearing and drinking well now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
An ex St. Louis bottle. A compelling and balanced wine. While for some friends, this bottle did not stand out within the broader line up, I found it to be one of the most balanced and complete wines.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
The wine of the evening by some margin. Still with some very stylish oak, but at a good place in its maturation. A lovely purity of fruit that could never be described as over ripe, despite the name of the vineyard! Bright acid profile to maintain freshness throughout.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Perhaps the weakest of the evening. While Meo with bottle age is often the stuff of legends, this particular bottle, while still pleasurable and in no way flawed, exhibited a rather sharp and prominent acid driven palate throwing the wine out of balance.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tremendous wine and surprise of the evening. Stunning levity and ripeness. The acid profile was totally harmonious. While certainly one of the leaner wines, it was devoid of the green characters / astringency that many would sat typify the 04 vintage.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
While for many this was one of the top wines of the evening, I somehow could not wrap my head around this bottle. While I would no go so far as to say the wine was closed, it simply was not telling a compelling story. While the structure was there and there was a lovely balance to the wine. There was not the bombastic, extroverted fruit I might have hoped for from an 09. Still very Burgundian and a very pleasurable wine indeed!
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
This, for me, was one of the finest wines of the evening. Everything was in balance and the wine was at a perfect place in its evolution. The oak had receded enough giving way to beautiful, but not overbearing, red fruit. Total elegance.
