Introduction

Taking advantage of my staff discount I took Frank and Emma and KC along to Freds to enjoy the (hopefully) yummy locally sourced food

Flight 1 - with the food (4 Notes)

for convenience I've bundled up our meal into a single flight.
the wines were matched as follows:
Vat 1 - Kingfish (at Frank's suggestion)
Beajujo - Tartare and Black pudding
Dauzac - Lamb
Cornas - Cote de Boeuf/Rib Eye (Frank's suggestion)

  • 2009 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

From Coravin. Lime, lime leaf over green apple, slight butter on the nose. In the mouth it has quite sharp citric acid notes, flavours again showing lime but more grassy backed by green apple, that butter note is here as well with a little honeyed note. Very nice though a little too complex to match to Kingfish crudo.

  • 2020 Famille Dutraive Chénas Les Perelles

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chénas

From Coravin. Yarp, this is in that I'm all natural but you should have drunk me about six months ago - touches of nail varnish remover and wood glue are vying for attention on the nose with plenty of stalk based spice and sour red and black cherry fruit. More of the same on the palate but with the sour fruits in the ascendency, touch of burr, matched nicely to steak tartare, struggled with black pudding.

  • 1990 Château Dauzac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin and magnum. A bit of sous bois with a touch of farmyard joins slightly riper black hued fruits; plums; berries; currants with a touch of leather. In the mouth it's impressively dense without being overtly tannic, leathery dark fruits to the fore. I think this is my first 1990 Bordeaux from magnum. Interesting experience compared to the single bottles. More fruit and concentration but less balance. That could, of course, just be the producer. Ho hum.

  • 2016 M. Chapoutier Cornas Les Arenes

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Decanted 30 minutes before consumption. This started off quite funky but that blew off with a little air revealing a slightly rustic, black hued fruit, savoury Cornas. Not dirty rustic I hasten to add, just a little coarse around the edges on the nose though the palate showed a little more polish. Fresh and charming with cote de boeuf.

Closing

A lovely evening of rather splendid food and grog. All the Coravined wines were from the by the glass section.
