  • 2019 Domaine Ponsot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

    Tasted alongside 2015

Aromatics of pear, lychee and jasmine with starfruit, smoke and spice on the palate. Lovely mid-palate intensity that was showing vibrancy with crisp acidity and laser-like precision. Lovely finish and while not very complex, there is good structure and underlying pedigree. This had more similarities to the Dujac Luisants style and dis-similarities to the Ponsot style so I had this pegged for Dujac. Preferred this, over the 2015.

  • 2015 Domaine Ponsot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

    Tasted alongside 2019

Bouquet started off with lemon rind, yellow melons and almonds. Palate showed ripe fruit, cream, some salinity and toasty oak. Good depth, lovely textures and a long finish, supported by a slap of acidity. This was more aligned to the Ponsot style that I am familiar with.

  • 2018 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

    Tasted alongside 2018 Arlaud CDLR

Cherries, pomegranate and raspberries come to the fore with supporting core of dark red fruit, earth, blood oranges and kirsch. There is a lively bit of minerality supporting the wine with a surprising nice level of tension and power. Certainly a joy to drink! Good underlying material and this is a lovely wine. In comparison to the CDLR, this was the bigger and burlier wine and blinded I thought this was the CDLR.

  • 2018 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Tasted alongside 2018 Arlaud CSD

Sweet aromatic florals leap out from the glass with nuances of orange peel, cherries and strawberries. There was a good amount of stemmyness that screamed Dujac. Cherries, raspberries, plums and mulberries dominate alongside a wonderfully textured palate. Fantastic density and power yet maintaining balance and elegance with tannins being a touch frigid. Actually reminded me very much of a 2017 Dujac CSD I had earlier in the year and I had pegged this as a CSD. Definitely one of my top 3 wines of the evening

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Joseph Drouhin Clos St. Denis 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Bright violets, lavender, pomegrate and mulberry come to the fore, the kind that gets you excited in a Mugnier way except this fell flat on its face. Cloves, sandalwood and spice ensue on the palate, alongside an unfathomable amount of kirsch and prunes in an all too ripe fashion. Soft on the exit with smooth tannins and decent acidity but I didn't enjoy this at all. When revealed, I wasn't exactly surprised - I haven't found a Drouhin CSD that I've enjoyed, notwithstanding with my limited dataset.

  • 2014 Charles Van Canneyt Bonnes Mares 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

A little muted at the start, perhaps needed a bit more time to really open up. Unriped strawberries, figs and cigar smoke on the opening that showed a contrast on the palate, for the better of course! Dark red fruit with hints of unriped apricots, cherries and iron, this was burly and powerful with good fruit concentration and underlying minerality base. Putting this away for some time will only take away the cap on the upside

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Not quite the classic Dujac bouquet yet brimming of elegance amidst high toned aromatics, violets and pomegranate. Mulberry, cherries and raspberry dominate the front of the palate while a robust and sturdy flex of the CDLR muscles of power and density ensues. On the finish, lovely supporting cast of earthy undertones and good acidity with tannins integrating really nicely. Definitely amongst the top 2 or 3 tonight.

  • 2008 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru

Coming right after the Dujac, this was no slouch and although lacking in the elegance department, this was more classic and structured than the Dujac. Fantastic bouquet of dark berries, spice and violets. Black tea, cinnamon and maraschino cherries dominate the palate. Good energy and concentration with acidity typical of the vintage with sturdy tannins. Still youthful today and if you had to open one, I’d give it some air time 😊

  • 2008 Domaine du Clos de Tart Morey St. Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Rose water, orange peel, iron and cloves dominate the bouquet with sage, cloves, blood orange and ferrous iron coming to the fore on the palate. There was lovely minerality coming through supporting the palate that had good fruit concentration and density whilst finishing off with slightly higher acidity. Drinking well today.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

  • 2006 Domaine Arlaud Bonnes Mares 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Possibly my favourite nose of the evening even though it was showing way more advanced. Thought this was the 2002 but most folks thought it was in the 80s and 90s. Not that it was dying but it still had good structure and fruit - blood orange, cranberries and bayberries come to the fore that was supported by some salinity, earth and sage. Drinking well today albeit advanced.

Flight 6 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

This was nicely developed today and ready to drink. Comte, sois boi, grapefruit and plums dominate the bouquet along with oddly enough, corn? Palate showed cloves, manuka honey, spices and ferrous iron whiffs. Slighty sweet on the finish with strawberry liquor and kirsch with silky tannins. A lovely drink but not sure if there is upside to holding this longer.

  • 2007 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Perhaps overwhelmed by the roasted bresse that just arrived at the table, I couldn’t get much of the bouquet on this wine even after swirling, swirling and swirling. What stood out in this palate was a lovely balance of sweet cherries, chocolate, tea leaves and smoke which culminated in a seamless finish with crisp acidity and silky tannins. Finish could be a bit longer, perhaps a tired bottle.

  • 2007 Lucie & Auguste Lignier Clos de la Roche 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Floral aromatics of dried roses and violets come to the fore with dark berries and leather saddle on the palate. I felt this was a little tired and fading although there was a sense that this was once powerful and dense. A little forgettable today perhaps given the line up.
