Introduction

Off to Dan's to try some lovely Bordeaux, I got a spare (gift) ticket (thanks Jon) so invited Ron along as well. Arrived early so had a quiet look at a couple of Rieslingfreak wines

Flight 1 - Rieslingfreak (2 Notes)

could we say that these guys have changed the course of Australian Riesling production? Possibly...

Flight 2 - Bordeaux 2019 (6 Notes)

Pointy oak on a couple of these but also some real beauties as well...

  • 2019 Château Haut-Bailly II

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Lashings of oak show as caramel, sweet spice, vanilla over black fruits; plums, blackcurrants, with time the oak begins to integrate on the nose. Juicy, fleshy, leathery liquorice tannins have a slightly chalky textured drying quality. Fruit more plummy than blackcurrant on the palate. Hmm.

  • 2019 Château Pape Clément

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Polished oak, cream, plums, slight mocha/milk chocolate, a little black and red currant under this. Juicy, fleshy, that red fruit note from the nose lends freshness to the palate to offset the non intrusive alcohol warmth. Tannins are silky, powdery, persistent. Needs time to come together. Hmm at the mo'.

  • 2019 Château Le Boscq St. Estèphe

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

With this wine the oak is immediately far less prevalent on the nose; it shows fresh, slightly crunchy, blackcurrant, pyrazine, slightly herbaceous notes show a touch of mint. Medium plus intensity acidity, fruit crunchy here as well though less well delineate with a little red fruit joining the black, tannins are grainy and in support. Long, fresh. Yum.

  • 2019 Château Phélan Ségur

Polished oak is integrated with plums and blackcurrant and offer dusty spice, a little chocolate and slightly herbaceous notes. Juicy, savoury, plums, cedar, blackcurrant, slight non intrusive alcohol warmth, plentiful grippy, slightly chalky, tannins, persistent and quite lovely. A touch of plain chocolate on the finish. Very good.
