Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2020 Comando G Bréna 94 Points

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

I poured off a glass earlier in the afternoon and didn't get to this until later in the night. The air helped a ton as this was perfumed and expressive, filling the glass with red cherries, red berries, raspberries, bright red fruits, rose petals, violets, crushed rocks, earth notes, licorice, leather, and some plum notes. The Full bodied feel is pure silky as it dances across the palate while the crisp, medium+ acidity is well-integrated along with silky, medium+ tannins. The nose and palate show off a lot of depth and style that plays into a purity to the red fruits while still possessing a savory side. This certainly will improve with some time, but this is a real sexy beast already!

  • 2020 Chapelle St. Theodoric Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Guigasse 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Where the Comando G shows off purity, this is all about savoriness that leans into darker fruits. Black cherries and black raspberries with some kirsch liqueur are there right away as they then lean back into violets, licorice, crushed rocks, leather, and some garrigue notes that get into the upper parts of the nostrils. This is a more searching wine that has seen the same amount of air as the Comando G, but the nose is still wound a bit more tight. The Full bodied feel is rich, yet plush with crisp, medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This absolutely will benefit from at least another 5 years of aging. This is for those that like the savory side of Grenache whilst still wanting the dark and red fruits that Chateauneuf du Pape can bring.

  • 2018 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Even on pop and pour, this was a beauty. There is just so much purity and balance with just a bit of shyness that forces you to come closer. The theme here is: red. As in red fruits. They are showing off a lot of balance and poise with red cherries, raspberries, spice notes, plums, red berries, violets, rose petals, some herbs, and a touch of baking spices. The Medium bodied feel is poised and balanced with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This certainly shows off the more forward side of the vintage, but it doesn't come close to being overbearing on the fruited side. Instead, this is a giant, delicious bowl of cherries that is immensely enjoyable from the first sip until the last.

  • 2017 Cazé-Thibaut Champagne Les Leriens 88 Points

    France, Champagne

This leans heavily into the oxidative side and is a more golden color in the glass. There is a lot of red apples, nectarines, chamomile, nougat, yellow fruits, yellow flowers, orange peels, and some kumquat. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with tart, high acidity. The oxidative side of the nose carries through on the palate and the finish is a little clipped. This was honestly a bit disappointing. I've had some really good Caze-Thibauts and this just is missing the mark for me.

  • 2017 Cazé-Thibaut Champagne Le Chemin des Plants 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Like the Les Leriens, this leans more into the oxidative side of Champagne. Thankfully, this isn't pushing it as hard and instead shows off a lot of expressive qualities with red and green apples, bosc pears, quince, nectarines, navel oranges, creams, vanilla beans, yellow flowers, mint, brioche, warm pastry notes, and some honeydew melons. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and silky with tart, high acidity that also shows off a lot of mouthwatering qualities. I liked this a lot more than the Les Leriens and this feels much more representative of what Fabien Caze can do.
