Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Roger Pouillon et Fils Champagne Grande Vallée Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

The nose is savory and aromatic with tones of nectarines, quince, red apples, vanilla beans, toast, brioche, bosc pears, wood spices, baking spices, and yellow flowers. There is good depth and balance, but the oak note is a smidge prominent. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and rounded with tart, high acidity. This is lovely with excellent texture on the palate. Pouillon always delivers for me and this is no different.

  • 2007 Azelia Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is perfumed, deep, and savory as it fills the glass with dark red cherries, raspberries, crushed rocks, licorice, violets, roasted herbs, dusty notes, juniper berries, and some tar notes. This is the kind of nose that really draws you in with a more searching style. The Full bodied feel is balanced and deep with mouthwatering, high acidity that is integrating along silky, high tannins. The feel is robust, yet balanced and with poise that leans into a lengthy finish. This is really entering a great window as it shows off the warmth of the vintage but in a way that allows this to be a really killer Barolo. This can certainly age longer, but it feels like it is really in a great place to drink.

  • 2007 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose shows off more fruited tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, sour red berries, a touch of oak, currants, cinnamon, spice box, violets, licorice, tobacco, and tar notes. There is excellent depth to the nose that is backed up by good balance and layering. The full bodied feel is balanced and poised with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is in a great place right now and is very 2007. It is balanced with richer fruit and fresh acidity while still having a lush side to the nose and palate.

  • 2007 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The nose is nuanced and perfumed with strawberries, red cherries, licorice, violets, herbs, raspberries, wild flowers, sweet tobacco, tar, and juniper berries. The nose is so deep and heady as it leans deep into the red spectrum for the tones. The Full bodied feel is elegant and long with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This needed about 7 hours to fully open up. It’s still clearly primary and a bit shy, but very drinkable if proper air is given. This was a real pretty and refined Monprivato that has plenty of life ahead.
