Flight 1 - 2018 (3 Notes)

  • 2018 Futo OV/SL 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Nose showed aromatic red flowers and berries, lots of clean and pure fruits. The clean fruits are accentuated by river washed gravel, providing freshness to the aromas.

Palate showed clean dark red fruits with nice swiftness on the palate, and dark tree bark with a touch of bitterness. White flower pedals on the palate makes the already clean fruits seem more natural. Clean minerals on the finish with a bit of shine. Savory pencils eventually develop on the finish as well.

Will take some time in bottle to integrate more. The wine at the moment seems "separated" in terms of flavors, as each note wanted to show out for themselves only. Might be a while before they know how to start working with each other. Airing it out and following through should be okay too.

  • 2018 Futo Oakville 97 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Aromas showed dark red fruits and black fruits like ripe cherries without much sweetness at all, and a touch of bitterness. There is also a damp earthiness, saturated with fallen and decaying berries rather than morning dew.

Elegant and intense on the palate. Clean and pure fruits, with clean mineral notes from something like large slabs of slate. Spiced graphite on the finish. With time in the glass, freshness pumps its brakes a little to allow a darker profile to overtake it. Better integration with time, while displaying a ton of structure with its fine tannin and fresh acidity.

Would've loved to follow this over the course of a long evening. Great balance. 97+

  • 2018 Futo 5500 96 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Aromas dark red fruits, very similar to the Oakville bottling, but with a bit of opulence and richness. There’s a touch of citrus that gives the aromas a nice complexity and refreshing quality, along with a gentle caress of pencil shavings.

Palate matches nose with dark, opulent fruits but without any citrus notes. Brooding in profile but holds the same freshness and class. Awesome cedar notes on the finish, followed by pleasant savory notes.

Loved the freshness on this one, but the fruit still seems somewhat youthful. The acidity is doing a lot of the carrying here, keeping the fruits in check, never allowing it to become rich. This should be had in another handful of years. Wouldn't mind following this over the course of a long evening neither.
