Definitely an extra brut BdB. Dry with a savoury, cheesy note that plays off sharp, acidic green apple and very subtle spiced warmth. Found it fell apart on the palate quite fast, tight and austere. This is probably something real connoisseurs would enjoy but it went over my head.
Confident, smoky nose but without clear direction - a touch muddled. Expansive and satisfyingly oaky- notes of ginger biscuits, lemon on the palate and a dry richness. Nice. The price is mental.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Poised with a touch of spice, contained ripeness with orange peel, lemon, a wisp of smoke and something a little vegetal. A sharp sweaty note that isn't altogether unpleasant. Quite precise on the palate: not hugely concentrated but showing depth. Opens out and gains a buttery dimension with time.
My favourite white of the night by a clear margin and if that makes me basic then so be it. It's more obvious than the Burgs, sure - but it's complex, rangy and delicious. Expressive and deep with papaya, ripe lemon, caramel: clean, ripe and precise. Breadth on the palate with a powerful seam of acidity, waves of freshness on the finish.
Shy nose: orange and nutmeg, ginger, wet stone and a honeyed note. Vertical and tart palate: fleeting. Underwhelming for me, although it did seem to become more expressive with time.
It's probably more charming than it is good: a meaty note balanced against sweet red berry fruit, thyme on the nose. Tart, smooth and slightly inconsequential palate: drifts away on the finish with a bitter kick. Refreshing and could work slightly chilled.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Spiced cherry, violet on the nose: beautifully aromatic. Both tart and rich: lovely balance with a touch of pepper and meat on the palate which is rather strict and unyielding. Needs more time?
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Slightly pulpy and developed: coffee, dark cherry, violet. Expensive but subtle oak. A sweet tender note thats enticing and softens the overall impression. Gentle and balanced on the palate.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
A scorched note at first but then there's a wave of dark red fruit, an animal character, spiced sweetness, coffee. Floral notes emerge with time: it's slightly clenched but has good depth and concentration.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Great balance and delicacy on the nose: spiced strawberry, cherry, dried flowers - deep and aromatic. Great concentration and delineation on the palate, chalky depth and gentle persistence. It's all very refined: rich while retaining subtlety and verve.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Developing beautifully: has the energy of youth with red fruit, dried rose petals and a sweet, meaty edge. Really compelling nose - heady and profound - less wonderful on the palate but very enjoyable.
Rich, truffley, black cherry and peonies. Precise and inviting nose. Tart and spicy on the palate with a touch of sweetness. Powerful and tough rather than delicate.
