Introduction

A small get-together at The Kenwood with some great wines!

Flight 1 - Starters (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Cabernet Based Wines (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

PnP - It's been 4 years since I last had this wine. I think it would have benefitted from a 1-2 hour decant. Nose was nice with perfumed dark fruit, purple flowers, some forest floor, tar, anise and hints of oak. Palate initially shows some alcohol (for that reason, I think this wine showed slightly better 4 years ago), rich fruit (mostly blackberry and blueberry) with hints of plum spice and bramble. This wine has smooth tannins and is all about the fruit, which still takes center stage. For those looking for terior or secondary flavors, I am not sure if they will ever emerge, but for those who enjoy more decadent, hedonistic wines, I would drink up....I fear alcohol may start to replace some of thee fruit. 93+ today.

  • 2012 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

30 min decant - Nose is more subdued and integrated than the 09 (likely because the 09 was PnP and this had a 30 min decant) Some earth notes to go with some awesome dark and red fruit! Palate showed nicely integrated red and black fruit, with some tar, graphite, earth and some sweet toasty oak. Full mouthfeel with smooth tannins. Much more fruit than tertiary flavors, but tertiary flavors were present and distinct. This is in a nice place! Solid 95 for my palate!

  • 2014 The Mascot 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

1 hour decant through an aerator - Nose is perfumed with violets and cherry blossom, some red fruit and slight cedar notes. Palate is rich, with fruit and earthy notes more integrated. Dark and red fruit are offset with earth and forest floor, also some spice, tar and sweet oak lurking in the background. This is a much more refined wine with a luxurious mouthfeel and polished tannins. Totally a different style than the Outposts. I liked this better than the 09, but not as well as the 12. Solid 94 for me.

Flight 3 - A Lone Rhone (1 Note)

  • 2010 Château de Vaudieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Val de Dieu 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

PnP - Nose shows lots of spice, some funk and wet dirt, with mushroom, red fruit and tobacco. Palate shows lots of red and dark fruit, some forest floor, beef blood and spice. Nicely resolved tannins and silky mouthfeel. Very nice! My wine of the night, just slightly ahead of the 2012 Outpost TV. 95+ for this bottle!
