Introduction

Back in one of my favorite cities, so what was I to do? Well, drink a whole lotta delicious wine of course!

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2004 Château Palmer 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    (1/3/2024)

Oh mah gawd. This is just so beautiful and balanced as it meanders in the glass with dark red cherries, tobacco leaf, cedar, red florals, red currants, raspberries, a touch of fresh leather, earth notes, and red berries. The Medium bodied feel is pure silk right now with crisp, medium acidity and refined, medium tannins. This was a beauty when young and it has gone up a notch since from my memory. Palmer has a tendency to really do special things in unexpected vintages and that is clearly the case here!

  • 2020 Jessica Litaud Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru Les Crays 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru

    (1/3/2024)

Lovely and perfumes right from the get-go with red apples, peaches, lemon oil, vanilla extract, nougat, nectarines, navel oranges, bosc pears, yellow flowers, quince, and a bit of jasmine. The Medium bodied feel is refined and balanced with crisp, medium acidity. The acidity has some nice cut and freshness along with a lot of length on the palate. This is some real real good shit from what has become a cult producer in short time.

  • 2016 Trimbach Riesling Frédéric Emile 94 Points

    France, Alsace

    (1/4/2024)

Deep and succulent right away as it permeates in the glass with liquid rock, meyer lemons, a touch of oily notes, red apples, quince, gunflint, spiced pears, jasmine, apple blossoms, and some saline. The Full bodied feel is deep and silky with mouthwatering, high acidity that is coming into balance. This is a real beauty. It’s beginning to hit its stride and has many years ahead of it.

  • 2000 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (1/5/2024)

This was by the pour at Hedonism Wines. The nose is so deep, layered, and refined with flowing tones of dark red cherries, currants, mint, tobacco leaf, cedar, cranberries, toast, spice box, violets, and some fresh savory herbs. There is a real seamless quality that I'm highly enjoying every time I put my nose into the glass. The Medium/full bodied feel is vibrant and silky with crisp, medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This is right in its zone and it's glorious. There are many many years of life ahead of it to be sure, but the window is wide open as everything is in full harmony right now.

  • 2019 Bérêche et Fils Champagne Campania Remensis 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    (1/5/2024)

I brought this to St John to take advantage of their 35 quid corkage. This was wide open and nuanced immediately with orange peels, nectarine, Meyer lemon, peach blossoms, red apples, quince, toast, spiced pears, vanilla beans, baking spices, meringue, and some biscuits. There is a lovely, primary nature to the tones as they all play really well together even now. The Medium bodied feel is silky and refined with tart, high acidity and a lengthy finish. This is always a banger for me and that is certainly the case right here! These do age pretty well over the short term and I do think that this can improve with about 3 or so years of cellaring just to let it all come together seamlessly.

  • 2019 Mickaël Bourg Cornas Les P'tits Bouts 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    (1/5/2024)

This was available by the bottle at Sager+Wilde. So, I had to jump on this with the quickness as this is my first time finally having a Bourg Cornas! And oh boy, what an introduction!! This is olive tapenade city right from the first whiff! There is so much depth and style, filling the glass with black cherries, black raspberries, violets, tobacco leaf, licorice, dark spices, black fruits, savory herbs, a touch of sanguine notes with an underlying briny quality that is driving me wild. The Full bodied feel is way more silky and deft than I would expect from a young Cornas with tart, medium+ acidity and chewy, medium+ tannins. This, this fucks. Like, it fucks really hard. This isn't just up my alley, it's my 10-lane highway. This will clearly improve with age and I'm not really here to say that it's "drinking" per se at the moment. What I am saying is, yea, this is some really good shit that I need to find a way to have more of in my life.

  • 2017 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Blanc de Blancs Heurtebise 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    (1/6/2024)

This was lovely right away as it showed off balanced tones of toast, nectarines, almond paste, red apples, quince, vanilla beans, biscuits, stone fruits, smoke, gun flint, and some crushed rocks. There is excellent balance and poise already while it does show a slight toasty side from the oak use. The Medium bodied feel is deft and balanced with tart, high acidity. It’s been a minute since I’ve had a Huertebise and this is just flowing right now. I don't think this really needs that much aging as it is fairly seamless already with a good amount of integration on both the nose and palate.

  • 2021 Luddite Wines Chenin Blanc 92 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Bot River

    (1/7/2024)

The nose is wide open and seamless right away, filling the glass with red apples, nectarines, nougat, meyer lemons, vanilla beans, spiced pears, candied citrus, elderflower, saline, sea breeze, apple blossoms, and some stone fruits. There is a lot of complexity here with a style that is distinctly Chenin while also being it's own beast. The Medium bodied feel is textured and refined with tart, high acidity. This is a delicious Chenin from a vastly underrated producer. I really wish these travelled more as there’s super serious quality here.

  • 2019 Mad wine Tokaji Late Harvest 91 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    (1/7/2024)

This was a courtesy pour at the restaurant. There is a lovely, succulent nature to this with orange blossoms, nectarines, sweet peaches, red apples, quince, apricots, fig, and some marmalade tones. The full bodied feel is silky and layered with mouthwatering, high acidity. Just beautiful! The botrytis is clearly here, but there is also tension and release.

  • 2022 Virgen del Galir Godello Valdeorras Pagos del Galir/Val do Galir A Malosa 88 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras

    (1/8/2024)

The nose is balanced and fresh with crushed almonds, red apples, pear, saline, nougat, lanolin, tree fruits, jasmine, and some elderflower notes. I really like the freshness of the nose, but it does lack some depth that would really kick it up a notch. The Medium/full bodied feel is balanced with crisp, medium+ acid. This is lovely and textured with a very Chenin-esque side.

  • 2017 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Imperial Gran Reserva 92 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    (1/8/2024)

This was a btg pour. The nose showed off a lot of complexity with sour red cherries, cranberries, rose petals, dill, coconut, leather, red currants, tobacco leaf, and some sour red fruits. There is excellent depth and class already with the fruit showing a lovely primary quality that is well balanced and integrated. The Medium/full bodied feel is refined and lengthy with tart, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The structure is clearly youthful and this will certainly benefit from cellaring. I would love to try this in the future when I can actually sit down with a bottle rather than a 3oz pour. It is great for a snap shot in a quick moment, but this wine does deserve so much more.

  • 2019 Bodegas Frontonio The Garage Wine 93 Points

Spain, Aragón, Vino de la Tierra Valdejalón

    (1/8/2024)

I popped and poured this at dinner. I did have it put in a decanter, but it was drunk over a couple of hours. After about a half hour, this is showing beautifully with bright red cherries, raspberries, red currants, cloves, cinnamon, rose petals, red fruits, fresh picked berries, licorice, and Asian spices. There is excellent depth here and a lot of purity. The Medium/full bodied feel is elegant and deft with crisp, medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This is some absolutely glorious Grenache from unsung terroir. It sees whole cluster, yet it doesn't come close to stemmy or too baking spice-y. Instead, this is pure and balanced with a headiness that is extremely inviting. This is beautiful right now and I can easily see it ramping up a notch with some cellaring.
