Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé 95 Points

    France, Champagne

First time trying the Rose and I see why the premium is substantial but yet substantiated. Expressive and balanced from the get go with cherries, raspberries and dried flowers on the bouquet with strawberry cream mousse, blood orange with a touch of salinity on the palate. Beautifully balanced and elegant but obviously still a baby with a ton of structure. Fine tannins and lovely texture on the mid-palate. This is not only incredibly fresh but well textured and in line with the wonderful year that 2008 is, am excited to see how this develops further!

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2019 Coche-Dury Meursault 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Bouquet showing waves of popcorn, starfruit, wax, flint and hazelnuts with fruit persistence and minerality on the palate. There is fantastic fruit concentration here but one gets the sense we committed infanticide. With time in decanter and in glass, white peaches and snow pears emerge fleetingly before shutting down and turning a touch too acidic. There is surely immense potential, both depth and flavour complexity, that age will surely bring someday.

Meant to go in a blind against the PYCM but the PYCM was too atypical that it was an easy guess that this was the Coche.

  • 2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Characteristically PYCM with a sublime combination of oak, saline, chalk and white flowers. Fantastic bouquet showing off PYCM typicity of power and depth, with gentle aromas of white flowers and lemon curd wafting from glass. Palate very approachable as with most 19s, showing white peaches, lemon oil, almonds and fine creamy mousse. More showy than the Coche Meursault today and it would be interesting to see how this develops.

  • 2017 Domaine Jean Chartron Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

My contribution. Pop and pour, it was showing beautifully with snow pears, meyer lemons, white flowers, peanut skin and sudachi zest. Palate showed a fistful of batard power and density that coupled with crisp acidity culminated in a pretty balanced finish. Great fruit concentration and texture but shut down a little over time in glass. By the end of lunch, one could sense great underlying potential but perhaps crimes of infanticide were committed again - lovely to check in on this one today and will open my next bottle from 2035 onwards

  • 2014 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

The traditionally hard hitting Grivot style meant that they usually take forever to come round and having only tried the “new style” Grivot in the form of 2022 EP wines, I was intrigued as to how this would perform.

Upon opening of the bouquet, it was clear that stylistically, there is a big difference here. Bouquet opened with stems, macerated cherries, blackcurrants and dark plums. Palate showed persistent fruit concentration with vosne spice, minerals, smoke and juicy red fruits in support of the bouquet. Tannins still pretty grippy, acidity quite crisp and texturally nice but there is a sense of imbalance here in the wine. Perhaps we caught it at a bad time but I am sure that I will be more excited about this “new grivots” in the foreseeable future.

  • 2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Unblinded. First nose of this wine and all I could think of was “wow wow wow”, there is definitely potential for further development but damm, this is sexy! Fantastic bouquet showing off waves of vosne spice, macerated cherries, wild strawberries, smoke and bayberries. Palate was sexy, luscious, sensual, and oh, did I mention sexy yet? Texturally gorgeous with sensual vosne spice and fantastic fruit concentration supported by a lovely earth and mineral base. Velvety tannins and a spike of acidity on the finish render this fantastically balance with both power and elegance. I want to be hugged by this wine all day - Charles has produced a damm excellent expression of burgundy with this one!

I am a bit of a sushi purist and frankly I don’t feel red wines go well with sushi but this was my wine of the lunch!
