Jason's birthday

Introduction

Theme was only broadly defined as good wines >15 years. The birthyear however was 1989 and hence an excellent Bdx vintage. Interestingly we did not get much Bordeaux and the few ones did not show particularly well.
The Pignan turned out to be rather controversial. For me clear WOTN even though Southern Rhone is far from being my preferred region.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1991 Jean-Pierre Mugneret Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Very aromatic and expressive, some olive tapenade, resolved tannins. Was sure this was a Northern Rhone from a warm vintage, guessed late 90s. Totally off...

  • 1993 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Dark fruit, initially a bit fizzy even, medium length. Very nice. NSG late 90s?

  • 2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Garnet with some bricking towards the rim. Animal notes on the nose, on the attack initially very soft and resolved but towards the finish still some grippy tannins. Finish not very long. Settled on Barolo 90s.

  • 2002 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Richer and fruitier than the Grivot preceding it. 05 Burgundy 1er Cru?

  • 1993 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Another still fairly young wine with rich and juicy fruit. Good length too.

  • 2006 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve 91 Points

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

Olive tapenade and rich dark fruit. Unlike the Pignan, I thought this tasted clearly Southern Rhone / C9dP.

  • 2008 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Same bottle as Melvin. Superb showing and in my eyes head and shoulders above all the other, very good wines during this great evening. Clearly whole clusters on nose and attack but not overdone, and then sweet red fruit made me initially think of a very ripe Burgundy vintage like perhaps 2009. This had also a Burgundian weightlessness on the mid palate but ultimately this combination of red fruit and sweetness in a clearly mature wine steered the discussion away from Pinot and Melvin brought up Rayas. Very long lingering finish. Superb wine and much more refined than the Fonsalette preceeding it.

  • 2000 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

A bit closed on the nose but better on the palate. Clearly a cooler year and less ripe than most of the wines preceding. Complex even if not super aromatic.

  • 1989 Château Calon-Ségur 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Own bottle. Nice and fully resolved classic Bordeaux towards the end of its drinking window. Similar in quality to the 83 and 85 Calon Segur I recently had - not the best decade for Calon Segur in my eyes.

  • 1989 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Own bottle. This was as expected the fun pairing with the 89 Calon Segur and guesses double blind mostly around Right Bank Bdx, but I was secretly hoping for a bit more from this wine as this was a perfect bottle with an in neck fill and a barely stained cork. Still rich dark fruit but lacked in complexity and depth even when compared to the good but not great Calon Segur. On the positive side this is good for another 15 years in my eyes as the rest of the bottle did not move a bit 24h later.

  • 1989 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This was unfortunately a very disappointing showing, a lean and mean left bank Bdx with a robust structure but not much fruit at all. A 3h decant might have helped but the wine left us all puzzled. On that evening around 89 points.
