France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Attractive nose that evolved over the course of the night. Buttery popcorn and smoke, but I was also getting some sautéed ground beef that added nicely to the complexity of the wine. I originally thought this was a 90 pointer but thinking back it just didn’t have the stuffing to be outstanding.
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Very powerful nose that did not resemble pinot, more like a Gigondas with some cab franc. The nose evolved all night but it was always compelling and very interesting. The wine is well made and a thrill to drink even though I would probably get bored of this after 6 bottles or so. My first australiuan pinot and was very impressed.
I didn’t write down a formal note from this but I enjoyed this a lot and thought this was very fun wine and easily thought how well it would pair with certain foods=great food pinot. Well made and not lacking in much. I did like this more than others though.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Dark and youthful looking in the glass. Nose of pepper and sautéed shitake mushrooms, hints of tar and roasted coffee beans were very well integrated and showed nice focus. After a couple hours some nice precise lilacs started to turn the wine a bit more floral and feminine. In the mouth the wine was smooth and elegant with great balance. Overall the fruit was showing very dark and deep with a clear resolve that the wine can benefit from years and years in the cellar. Lots of upside here.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very Very Very tight and closed at first. It took hours and hours to offer up anything at all. When it did it was a Big Boss Man of a wine. Weird, it showed young in it offerings but showed a notable amount of bricking and a lighter color than one would expect. Nose that showed a bit too much alcohol and oak. Chalky in the mouth. After about 10 hours the wine turned on some nice floral tones and smoothed out in the mouth. Not as nice as the donjon.
A lot more funk on the nose and palate than the last bottle. Scents of fresh tobacco, bright fruit, and perhaps some roasted tomato paste. Full throttle and plush in the mouth with a long finish. This wine did appear to be shutting down a bit but this is still a great wine that will only get MUCH better. I am big fan.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Nose of sweet cherries behind a wall of smoke and graphite that turned to a lemon-citrus flavor as the wine sat in the glass. Very Smokey on the palate with a nice feel but very thin. The palate and the finish had a nice herbal streak with some strawberry pop tarts. All in all a pleasant wine. 90+ *** after a few hours the wine opened up even more and it took on a nice gunflint forest floor pine forest nose and a slightly fuller body and a suprsingly long tasty finsih. Very nice indeed. 92-93
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
A very tight and unyielding wine. After a few hours it was offering some Smokey tarry shoe polish notes with a hint of banana. Dry and spicy in the mouth with a medium spicy finish. This wine did very little for me in the charm area. Others might have liked it more than I did.
Peperry nose (both black and white ground) a touch of bell peppers and shrooms bacon and cheese. Very focused and very smooth on the mid- palate but very peppery. I also noted a great color to it with little signs of falling apart.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
WOW! Background is barnyard but in front of it is a wave of something indescribable but very sexy and hedonistic. Chocolate? Yes. Flowers? Yes. Grilled steak, dirt, forest floor, pine, and as my wife described morning dew- all there in the nose but swirling around. What the wine lacked in focus and detail (unlike its 1989 counterpart) it makes up in intellectual stimulation. The wine was so smooth in the mouth with a silky feel with a finish that went on and on. This wine was a revelation for me as it was more interesting and likeable than any other great 89s I have had.
