Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2006 Kunde Estate Chardonnay 80 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Closed nose, with buttered corn, oak and a little pear. Oak bomb on palate. Some cookie flavors, almost no fruit. Way overprocessed. $16

  • 2006 Chateau St. Jean Fumé Blanc 86 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Closed nose, with a little floral lemon/grapefruit coming through. Rich, buttery, oaky. Low acidity makes this a quaffer that would lose against food. Simple. $16

  • 2002 Thomas Halby Zinfandel 88 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Black cherry jam nose, with some leather. Rich, lightly jammy and medicinal. Smooth tannins, light acidity to the point of flabbiness, medium body. Drink now: there's still a little fruit left, but it's fading. Long. 13.5% alcohol. $16

  • 2005 Tin Barn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Interesting nose - black raspberry bramble. Medium tannin, acid and body. Long, concentrated finish. Focused fruit, but not overly elegant. $20

  • 2003 Spann Vineyards Mo Jo 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Big rich nose, with a hefty helping of medicinal notes and some black cherry and light leather. Very light tannins, medium+ acidity, medium body. Refined. Still fruit forward. Juicy. Interesting. Sangiovese / Cab / Merlot. $thirtysomething

  • 2006 Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Nose is almost Burgundian, with red fruit, minerals and acidity bursting out. On the palate, this is too overripe and heavy. The tannins are also light, but it's somewhat saved by the zesty acidity that seems to dance on your tongue. $46

  • 2003 Rosenblum Cellars Syrah Reserve Kick Ranch 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Smoked bacon nose. Rich, medium tannin and acid, big body but not jammy. Perfect age. A very pleasant wine, but there's nothing specific that grabs me, which makes this a poor QPR at $50.
