Introduction

Vinaigre, Steve8, KSCO2, lovelandre, Impuilse and yours truly got together for an unforgettable weekend in March 2009 to cook and taste great wine amongst good friends and good company. A huge success with lots of good times and good wines poured. It included memorable moments of a certain someone accidentally breaking a 1970s Warre's vintage port before the weekend started as well as another person trying to fry bacon with butter. Ah the times. Look forward to the next one.

Not all wines are listed(we polished off 31 bottles in 2 days) and they are not in order of their flights and were consumed over the 27th and 28th of March.

Flight 1 (25 Notes)

  • 2001 Baileys of Glenrowan Shiraz 1920's Block 93 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East

    (3/27/2009)

Butterscotch, cedar, black licorice and hints of chocolate scents on this wine with some red plums and spices as it aerated. The full-bodied palate is lush but rich and not overpowering with dark cherries, plums and more chocolate. Very appealing and may I say, an elegant Aussie shiraz that shows lots of individuality and character while not sacrificing typicity.Too bad this was my bottle but at least was shared with good friends. Medium-long finish.

  • 2003 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/28/2009)

Nose of buttered popcorn, and candied apples. The palate is lush but a little underwhelming for a wine of this pedigree. More green apples notes and buttery popcorn on a sweet mid-long finish. It probably needs much more time(I hope) since it was underwhelming given it's price and the track record provided by previous vintages I've had. 91+

  • 1983 Balthasar Ress Winkeler Jesuitengarten Riesling Kabinett 86 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

    (3/28/2009)

had it with lunch. Similar to my previous notes. Apricot, petrol and some oak notes on the nose. The palate was nice but a little thin and not up to the same standards as the nose. A simple good wine but not complex. Definite drink now. Still a steal at under 20$ Cad for a nice 26 year old riesling. Exceptional value.

  • 2001 Bodegas Muga Rioja Selección Especial 93 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    (3/28/2009)

This is really ready to go and time in bottle won't improve it all that much more.Lovely wine with modern characteristics. Lots of mint and strawberries and blackberry on the nose(the ripe kind). More blackberry on a smooth and very velvety palate that shows firm tannins but well integrated and not making drinking this unattractive.

  • 2003 Château Fortia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Baron 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    (3/27/2009)

Nose of ripe fruit, garrigue, and raspberry with some cooked strawberry notes. Palate is still tannic with raspberry coulee and lots of acidity keeping this fresh, especially given the vintage. Really sexy wine. Drinking well tonight but give it more time but not bad right now. 93

  • 1996 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Domaine de la Maladière 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (3/27/2009)

Stunning wine. Caramel, strawberry yogurt and ripe melon notes on the nose. Very seductive. The palate was a little lighter with decent to low acidity, green apples and citrus notes and some caramel on a medium long finish. One of the best whites I've ever had and although it became less interesting after 20 minutes in the glass, one of the oldest dry whites I've ever had. 95 points

  • 2005 Château Brown Blanc 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    (3/28/2009)

Solid white with a seductive nose of pears, green apples, vanilla, lanolin, honey and buttery scents and melon with some straw in the mix. Palate is lush seemingly voluptuous caressing your taste buds, deceptively sweet as there is a good dose of acidity with apples flavours coming through and ending on a long long apple-pear finish. Really enjoyable. Revist in 2-3 years to see the progress but is really good to now.

  • 1999 Dominus Estate 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (3/27/2009)

Nose of dark cherry, cassis, vanilla and sweet oak. PAlate is rather fresh with vibrant acidity, dark cherries and more tannic bite but well-integrated and well structured wine. Not closed but rather muted as well. Needs more time. 92+

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

  • 2000 Gaja Barbaresco 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (3/27/2009)

Incredible bottle. Nose of raspberries, earth and morello cherries. Lots and lots of freshly picked cherries and more earth. This wine has personality that just sings to you all the while maintaining its composure and elegance. Special. Beautiful.

  • 1997 Antinori Solaia 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (3/27/2009)

One of the better Supertuscans I've ever had, next to the Ornellaia. Green bell peppers, coffee notes on the brooding nose. Cabernet Sauv is my guess for the predominent varietal. Beautiful palate with lots of blackberry, mocha and vanilla flavours and medium acidity. Long blackberry and vanilla finish. Excellent.

  • 2001 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (3/27/2009)

Nose of muted red fruits. But this is an elegant wine whose potential is nowhere near its apogee. It is traditionally made, has power and elegant underneath and it opened up during the time I had it in the glass. Keep for another 5 years or more.

  • 2000 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabajà 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (3/27/2009)

Another stunning Barbaresco. Nose of blackberry, licorice, and dark cherries. Palate is very ripe, lush with lots of mouth watering acidity but framed by good fruit. A medium -long finish. Good to go now.

  • 2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    (3/27/2009)

Very barnyard on the nose, with some funk that blew off on a dark and brooding nose. Huge palate of blackberry fruit, lots of everything but tightly wound but you can tell this is a huge wine. Chocolate and vanilla notes on a long long tannic finish. Needs a decade. 93+ for now.

  • 2001 Dominio Pingus Ribera del Duero Flor de Pingus 94 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (3/27/2009)

Beautiful kaleidoscopic nose, redolent of floral scents, emant, iodine, dark fruits, smoke, black plums, cherries and moka. The palate is full bodied, still quite tannic with black cherry notes. Long long finish with refreshing acidity. Young but very promising.

  • 2002 Dominio Pingus Ribera del Duero Flor de Pingus 92 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (3/27/2009)

Nose of red berries, morello cherries with a smoke edge to it all. Lots of freshness on the palate, good acidity with cherry notes and a lovely structure but not as complex, deep or brooding as the 2001 just consumed earlier. Medium full bodied with a medium long finish.

  • 1999 Alvaro Palacios Priorat Les Terrasses 93 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (3/27/2009)

Huge cedar nose with raspberries and black olives. Lush palate with lots of elegance and finesse despite some drying and grainy tannins on the way down. Full bodied and a long succulent finish. Became a little shut down after 20 minutes and became more acidic as the fruit receded. Needs time.

  • 1997 Alvaro Palacios Priorat L'Ermita 95 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (3/27/2009)

I can't believe I rated a slightly corked bottle 95 points but I'll stand by my score. This could have been a near perfect bottle had it been pristine. Lots of ripe cassis, spicy red plum and hints of blueberry. Waves of acidity and fresh red and blue fruit on the palate. Tannins are present but very well integrated, but make their presence and power known of the finish. Very elegant wine. Still enought stuffing to rate it a 95. Can't wait to taste an untainted bottle.

  • 2005 Clos Mogador Priorat 94 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (3/27/2009)

Nose of black licorice and dark chocolate. Really seductive and new world in its style. Lots more of the same replays on the palate with mouthcoating tannnis. Long tannic finish. A monster. Needs 5-7 years.94+

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    (3/27/2009)

Nose is a little mited but shows lots of cherries and blackberry flavours with wallops of vanilla. The palate is sublime, lush but framed by good acidity and blackberry, cherry and oak and vanilla notes. Very fine. A mix between modern and tradition. Long long finish.

  • 1999 Clos Mogador Priorat 96 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    (3/27/2009)

Wow. This is the 2005 with some age on it. Lots of chocolate and dark cherries and ripe plum flavours but on a more seemless and integrated palate than the 2005. Now, it is transforming into a grand vin. Very nice stuff. Long cedary finish. Can age more but already singing.
