Introduction

Xavier Rousset was nice enough to have a few of us along to his great restaurant, Texture, in Portman Square. The private room is very well done, the table was quite large and the wine service very good. the food, as always quite creative especially the crab served in a tomato gazpacho (really delicious) and the steak and triple cooked chips (almost up there with Chez Bruce and Hawksmoor chips)
the theme for wines was quite broad , California, so i wont post notes for everything just a few i thought stood out, there was also a really good bottle of Dominus 89 and of Rubicon but my notes for those two have seemed to go missing

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Alban Vineyards Syrah Reva Alban Estate Vineyard 94 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

California BYO @ Texture- this was a dark purple color and looked thick. smelled of blueberries and currants and some smoke. in the mouth this is a heavyweight, it is bursting with creamy purple fruits ad some cassis. there is a touch of heat and pepper but it is really more about the delicious mouthful of ripe cali fruit. very new style rhone but a very enjoyable glass of wine.

  • 1997 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 97 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

California BYO @ Texture- deep purple color, this bottle had been open for a few hours before the dinner. its quite funny as the HSS comes in a big massive bottle and sat on the table as if it was king and the wine was the same way. it was full of lush sweet young fruits like currants, sour cherries and blueberries but also had great balance and poise for such a big wine. the finish was very long and the wine just rolls from front to mid to back of your palate. this wine is showing a lot but i think is just going to get better and better

  • 2006 Kapcsándy Family Winery Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

California BYO @ Texture- this is a great wine story, new producers, old vineyard, real class in a glass. sweet mocha and purple fruits on the nose with a bit of forest. in the mouth the balance was great, a more claret than cali feel to it as there was a lovely blend of sweet fruits, creamy merlot and some minerality and wood. this wine had great mouth feel and long length, a very good young cali showing and i can only imagine this gets better and better
