Introduction

A wonderful meal prepared by Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski, with impeccable wine service provided by Cesar Kusik, all formerly of Rubicon. Many thanks to David for treating us to a remarkable array of wines, which were all in great shape (oft times in larger format bottles).

Flight 1 - Hors d'Oeuvres (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Marinated Squash Blossom (1 Note)

Flight 3 - Monterey Bay Sardine (1 Note)

Flight 4 - Chanterelles with Potato and Bacon (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine Fourrier Morey St. Denis Clos Solon Vieille Vigne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Light to medium color. Fragrant, complex aromas of red fruit and smoke. Yes, some greener notes here too, but not objectionable as in the Clos St. Jacques from this producer; in this case, they add some interest and lift. Good balance of savory and delicate (the latter pretty uncommon for Morey) with excellent ripeness. One of the better '04s I've tried.

  • 1999 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

From 3 liter bottle. Much less evolved looking than the '04 Fourrier. Weird medicinal, cranberry aroma that singed the nostrils at first, but this was from some higher toned menthol element and not alcohol. It settled down to show rather powerful black fruit and licorice with only the barest hint of secondary development. A forceful wine that still needs a lot of time to soften.

Flight 5 - Fig, Foie Gras, and Quail Tart (1 Note)

  • 2001 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Full for Nebbiolo with a strong black cherry fruit component and some pleasant secondary notes of licorice and tar. I wasn't sure how this would pair with a dish that contained some sweetness, but it turned out to be an inspired choice since the wine had an unusual amount of ripe fruit for a Barbaresco.

Flight 6 - Lamb (1 Note)

  • 1994 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Out of magnum. Undeveloped deep ruby. All cedar and Cabernet on the nose, very Pauillac-like impression. Strong black fruit and graphite, well balanced, and vigorous. This certainly doesn't come across as an off vintage wine, and in this format, it is amazingly young with little in the way of secondary development. Excellent Claret.

Flight 7 - Cheeses (2 Notes)

Flight 8 - Apple-Saffron Cake with Blackberry Sorbet (1 Note)

  • 1977 Dow Porto Vintage

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

From magnum. Color looked like a 20 year old Port, but the aromas and flavors were moderately sweet but very backward, stalky, and unintegrated. Not all that complex for a 30+ year old port. I would have guessed an early '90s vintage if I had tasted it blind.
