Clearly I got luckier with my bottle than other folks — cork was in great condition as was the wine. Quite light color for its age — only a shade darker than fresh. Definitely showing tertiary sherry / metallic notes but they melded well with a rich toasty savory broad palate and still strong acidity. I wouldn’t want to hold it a lot longer; definitely showing its age much more than a 1990 Krug (or an 82 Krug) but a great wine showing well right now.

Champagne Charlie #alldayeveryday (Chicago, IL): Definitely shows its age; this isn't anywhere as precise as the late-released 1983 Charlie that we had alongside. Nonetheless, there is definitely a distinct chardonnay signature here, coupled with a few Maillard notes. Not quite as sherried as the regular vintage bottling. I do like the heightened, and somewhat sharp, acidity here, as it provides some cut to a wine that is quite umami. For my palate, better to drink sooner than later.

Oxidized, nutty, stewed apple sauce aroma - notes of almonds, dried apricots and honey. Smells old. Candied apple flavor that’s lovely at first but then morphs into a funky, mushroomy, oxidized finish. Still some decent acidity.
Bones of a good wine but this should have been consumed years ago. Way past peak. We kind of expected this and it was more of an intellectual experiment.

Very exciting to try this wine -- I've quite liked the 1995 edition of this. The nose shows some marzipan as well as some bready notes. The palate is quite mushroomy; a little too far that way for me. Nonetheless, there is fresh acidity here to keep this alive.

Tasted at a vertical of 04, 95, 90, 85, 83 and 82 Slightly hazy in the glass. By far the most complex of the lineup and a real divider in the group. Minty chocolate, rollo toffee (caramel popcorn?) and a floral/chemical note..(playdoh? windex?). Acidity was not as bright as in the others but more in the line of a well aged montrachet.
I had this at second place in the lineup where as there were people not finishing their glasses. Not for the faint hearted but an absolute experience.

Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 1983 - 2004: Somewhat sweet, serene and soft. Fruits are ample not unlike in desert wine. Acidity of small yellow plums, but lacking the lift as it didn't have that much bubbles. A tad overripe/oxidised, but lovely on the palate. Score for the particular bottle.

Gogget i 1999. Mer subtil nese på denne. Hvor 95 eksploderer inn i neseborene, er denne rolig og elegant. Usedvanlig ren. Lekne varme kryddertoner, som skifter litt duft hver gang man stikker nesen nedi. Modne gule epler og noe søtt bakverk. Særdeles fresh 90 uten antydning til oksidasjon. Dette er stas! Strålende mousse. På smak byr den på moden frukt. Mer former her enn på duft. Høy konsentrasjon med god friskhet. Lang finish med moden frukt og en mineralitet som dekker munnhulen. Elektrisk. 94p+

Same enjoyment as the '95 but for different reasons. The '90 was, for obvious reasons, a lot more mature. More candied ginger, orange peel, and toffee on the nose and palate. Doesn't have the palate cleansing acidity, but that was okay. Very complex. The wine lingers on your palate. Delicious. No reason to hold. If waiting for a special occasion, open one with friends.

The 1990 Blanc des Millénaires is terrific bottle of Champagne, bursting from the glass with notes of candied lemon rind, warm briche, honeysuckle and wet stones. Bright, generous and concentrated on the palate, there is none of the corpulence or advanced maturity that once can find in some of the 1990 Champagnes these days, and this wine is really quite far below the radar considering its quality.

This was brilliant. Relatively light yellow color, small dissipating bubbles, apples, white and yellow fruit, subtle yeast. Vinous, long, and sophisticated. I always prefer this to the '95 -- which comes off as more advanced and briochey. The '90 is spectacular with a long life ahead of it.

Had this for Valentine's Day. The wife loved it, but I either didn't get it or figured we'd missed its peak by about two years. Don't get me wrong; it's superrefined, and it seems technically flawless when it comes to the bead and mousse and all that. And it's delicately pleasing, too: it has a biscuity-ness that tastes a little like a honey graham cracker. But it's so oxidized that it reminds me of a mid-90s white Burgundy that wasn't meant to age and is starting to droop. There just isn't much verve left here, at least for my tastes. I don't have a long experience with moderately-aged Champagne, so I'm probably not the best judge, but a 1990 Krug I had a year or two ago was in a whole different league from this. I suppose that's apples to oranges, though.

I don't know if I've ever had a better Champagne. Any fears of its being past its prime are unfounded. Pale yellow with a nose of almonds, fermenting dough, lemon oil. Be careful of opening this unless your guests are really prepared to savor it. Wow.

An Evening on Mount Nebbiolo (D'Amico Cucina): A great way to start the evening -- very festive with a gentle mousse and tons of tiny bubbles. Tasted May 5, 2006 at Lola’s in Dallas, TX. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Champagne flutes. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of apples, pears, bread and mushroom. Flavors of apple, pear and brioche. Well balanced. Drink over the net 3-5 years. Upgrading the my previous rating from 93 to 94. Estimating the price to be in the $80.00-90.00 range I’d say the value here is recommended.

Jonathan Dinh Birthday Eve Magnum Dinner (Tanglewood Restaurant, San Jose, California): From magnum - rich, honey cream nose; gorgeous, with depth and breadth to its elegant fruit that includes hints of orange, lemon and ginger and tangy acidity; long finish

Ready to go but still plenty of life ahead. Pale golden color with very tiny bubbles that dissipate in just a few seconds. Classic vintage Champagne dominated by bread dough flavors. Excellent right now but should hold for up to 5 years. JP

DAWGS Offline - May 5, 2006 (Lola's Restaurant, Dallas, TX): WIML94,PURPLE93,NOWA,~WS91-97

Consumed at the home of Eddie Osterland ("quest for the best" dinner, attended by Steve and Colleen Nemeth). A formal note was not made, but it can be said that the wine showed a golden color, relatively brisk bead and beautiful complex flavors. It is currently at its apogee.

(At Limoges – Baltimore) The second time this week! Light and delicate next to the ’90 RD. Lovely sweetness and long. This bottle is delicious and an excellent wine, yet in a style totally different from the RD. My personal preference is for the heavier style. (18)

No formal note: medium to light body – lots of little bubbles. Very fine sweet fruit mixed with a hint of yeastiness on the finish. Good depth for a blanc de blanc, but I still prefer a richer style of Champagne. That said, this is surely delicious. (17)

WLDG / Iverson offline (Pazzo, Surry Hills): Aromas of smoky biscuit, yeast and some cheesiness. Full rich finish, with quite soft acid. Maybe at its peak now? That prompted some discussion. I liked the wine very much.

I was blown away by the 1990 Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires. The open reveals honey, and a hint of citrus. The midbody and finish continue as an expression of elegance. One of my favorite champagnes!

Consumed at Ken Johnson's Big Bear cabin. Bottle provided by Ken Johnson. Light straw robe with brisk tiny bead. Very intense nose showing bread dough, orange blossom and marzipan aromas. Medium-bodied on the palate, with good acidity, similar flavors and a long, crisp finish. Bravo!
