Introduction
Such a pleasure to meet Merrill Lindquist and enjoy her wines. The 2001 is outstanding - no other word for it. My WOTN. I was looking forward to the Pol Roger, but alas, it was too young, IMO. I have another and will (try to) wait a number of years before opening it.
1996 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill

I had this earlier this summer and it was outstanding. Last night, it was far too young. Perhaps storage conditions made a difference, but while I thought this was good, it wasn't showing as many flavors and as much depth as a previous bottle did. Loads of green apple and citrus. Nice and shows lots of promise, but was so "crisp" as to be almost sharp. I'll wait for my next bottle.

1985 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

I have to say, this bottle confirmed that my Cali Cab sweet spot is the 1990's. I've had many positive experiences with SHS in the 00's and 90's and thought that the 80's would just add more integration and layers. And, while it did, it lost the darker fruity qualities, which are part of my favorite notes in Cali Cab. I got green pepper and fresh qualities like newly cut grass. This was nice, but give me a 1997 anytime.

2001 EMH Cabernet Sauvignon Black Cat

Lovely. My WOTN. Tiny production, just 25 cases. Gorgeous wine today, no need to wait. Powerful and refined at the same time. Its brightness on the palate was the only thing that betrayed its age. Dark fruits and incredibly balanced. I loved it. Glad to meet Merrill and get introduced to her Black Cat.
