Introduction

With nearly a foot and half of snow falling outside, we decided to open a bunch of random bottles. All good. The Bouchard 05 Corton-Charlemagne was my WOTN but everything was good. Always fun to open good stuff on spur of the moment.

Flight 1 - White starter (1 Note)

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

This bottle was really good today. Oak is prominent, but is very pleasant. Spice, white pepper on the nose. A slight bit green. Green apple. Buttery toast. Nice weight on the palate. Mouth watering finish.

  • 1995 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Disappointing. Again. Slightly oxidized. Aged much more so than 97 LeFlaive Folatieres, which is troubling. Candied dry fruit. Honey. Toffee and butterscotch, but everything is muted. Burnt butter. Palate really lacking and the finish is muted. Not scored. Too difficult to tell right now, but this could be flawed.

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

This is absolutely fantastic! Drinking very very well young. Easily a long haul white as well, but wow wow is it good now. Buttery oak. Typical Bouchard. Very oaky, but it is not off putting. Creamy and sharp. Palate is delicate but with great complexity and surprising weight for something as seemingly delicate as this. Minerals and acidity keep coming in waves. Good sharp green apple and spice. Long juicy and pleasing finish.

Flight 3 - Cali Pinot Noir (1 Note)

Flight 4 - Sampling of Syrah (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Carlisle Syrah Russian River Valley 88 Points

Nice nose, but interrupted by a little heat. Mocha, toffee, plum and blackberry. Jammy palate. Blackberry jam and sweet oak. Moderate finish. Good value.

  • 2007 Scholium Project Gardens of Babylon 88 Points

Good, but a little over the top. Peppery with big fruit. Juicy and mout watering syrah blend. Good acidity and nice structure. A little syrupy.

  • 2006 Lillian Winery Syrah 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Good juice. Deep purple color. Blood, generous amount of saline and some smoke on the nose. Herbal minty note develops. Dense and concentrated on the palate. Good fruity core complemented by the saline and mint. A nip of heat. That should hopefully settle. Nose focused finish. I've had the 04 and 05 and right now, both are better than this but this is very good.

Flight 6 - Dessert (1 Note)

  • 2003 Warre Porto Vintage 91 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Very good. Definitely needs time. Big plum note on nose with licorice. Nice dense fruit, both red and dark. There was a little bit of heat and the fruit was a bit subdued on the palate. Good sweet fruit. Very nice sweet finish.
