Flight 1 - Flight 1 – New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Private Bin 86 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Straw colored; light tropical nose with gooseberry as the wine warmed. There is a residual sweetness in the finish and quite unlike previous vintages. Grassy flavors to the fore and then light tropical flavors. Disappointing given previous strong efforts.

  • 2004 Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc 88 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Straw color. Textbook classic gooseberry and grass nose. Wonderful citrus attack in the mouth with crisp and sharp fruit - lots of kiwi fruit - and then herbaceous and cut grass flavors in the background. Bravo.

  • 2003 Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 90 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough, Wairau Valley

A fantastic wine. Straw colored, with a rich tropical nose. I love the contast of a tropical nose and then green and grassy flavors, or vice versa, and this wine delivers. Lots of grassy flavors in the mouth and then the tropical flavors - pineapple, kiwi - rise to the fore as the wine warms in the glass. This is a compex and flavorful well-balanced wine with a lot going on.

Straw coloring, with a vibrant citrus nose, with sweetish tropical fruits - mostly pineapple - in the mouth. Super value for money.

Flight 2 - Flight 2 – Californian Sauvignon Blanc (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Rancho Zabaco Sauvignon Blanc Dancing Bull 88 Points

    USA, California

Grassy nose, with citrus notes, and flavors of grass, herbs, and kiwi fruit. A little residual sweetness and not as dry as either the 2002 or 2003, this is still a superb value in Cal Sauvignon Blanc.

  • 2004 Kenwood Sauvignon Blanc 89 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Vibrant straw color. A more delicate nose than I expected - muted - but could have been too cool. Tropical fruits, creamy mouthfeel, with a strong flavor of grapefruits. Dry finish. Very good.

  • 2004 Ferrari-Carano Sauvignon Blanc 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

This is a monolithic wine but wow, does it do the job well. There's not a lot of complexity to the wine but the concentration of lemony and grapefruit flavors is impressive. The aromas hit early and they hit hard. In the mouth there is a richness of flavor and depth that invited re-tasting. Medium-bodied with an impressive finish.

Flight 3 - Flight 3 – Alsatian Pinot Blanc (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Hugel Pinot Blanc Cuvée les Amours 87 Points

    France, Alsace

Pale gold color. Aromas of burnt match, mineral and chalk. Minerally pear and apple in the mouth. A very expressive wine and good value for $13 I paid.

  • 2002 Trimbach Pinot Blanc 88 Points

    France, Alsace

A very plae wine with almost no color A muted nose expressing more chalk and mineral than fruit. Hints of apple in the mouth with steely dryness. Good secondary flavors as the wine gets some air - apple, pear - and other orchard fruits.

  • 2000 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot d'Alsace 91 Points

    France, Alsace

Pale gold color. A smoky, oily nose of apricots and nuts. Sensational and expressive in the mouth with a lemon-lime zing but with a complementary oily and viscous mouthfeel. Complex, pleasing.
