The annual pilgrimage to Martinborough, with Justus and Adam. Mostly I did not assign scores because the wines simply are what they are. Scores were only given if there was something remarkable, e.g., good, bad or different from expectation.
This continues to be my favourite PN of NZ -- not just Martinborough. Bought more 2004, as it is still improving. Bought 2006 even though it was not on for tasting. The 2005 was a tough vintage and is yet to be released.
Too bad the 2008 Riesling was from Te Muna -- I much prefer the Martinborough Riesling vineyard. Bought three older Rieslings and a couple of SB Botrytis.
Quite okay, but with a slight green streak.

Not bad. Fully dry but with sweet fruit aromas and flavours.

Nothing remarkable. Acidity too low, so even though the RS not high (12g/L), it still seemed unbalanced.

Not the normal Margrain Riesling. For 2007 and 2008 the Riesling grapes came from the Hawkes Bay, Te Muna vineyards. Pale, slightly effervescent. Low alcohol (11.8%), off-dry, nice aromas, but missing the substance of 2006 and earlier, where the grapes came from Martinborough vineyards.

Nice varietal character; acidity too low, otherwise okay.

Sweet (20g/L), minerally/salty, lowish in acidity (especially considering the variety), interesting, not bad.

Very oaky, big minerality/saltiness. Not great.

Light, simple, earthy.

Fruit, earth, minerality, oak, pepper and some sulfur notes. Adequate but odd acidity (not saying it was acidified...). Not great.

Rich, long complex, crisply acidic balancing the high sugar (150 g/L). Will likely improve over many years.

Not well balanced, far too sweet (250 g/L) for the lowish acidity.

Nothing noteworthy here, but bought one anyway (PN).
Pale dusty rose colour. Subtle fruits on nose and palate. Very dry, sapid (even slightly salty), but refreshing.

Described in the tasting room as "tropical", but not so; grassy notes dominate. Not great.

Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay. Big minerality, nicely acidic, rather full bodied and hefty, clean and simple.

Pretty colour and perfumes, nicely fruity, crisp acidity, slight bitterness on finish.

Seemed off-dry rather than dry, fruity, very simple.

Rich, sweet (wild guess, ~30 g/L RS), not enough acidity, unbalanced, very simple.

Earthy, no fruit. Smooth/light tannins, lowish acidity.

Nothing bad, nothing great. Bought one Runholder. Nice tasting counter and very enjoyable conversations with the servers.
Pale. Citrus aromas, crisp acidity, moderate alcohol, 7.8 g/L RS, light body. Clean, simple, easy.

Pale, light. Nose and flavour profile of asparagus, hay, grass, with some tropical fruits in the background. Clean, simple.

Subtle in aromas and flavours, almost neutral in every way. Slightly effervescent, simple, clean, easy drinking.

True varietal character on nose and palate -- sweet spices, a little tropical fruit. Nice balance of acidity and sweetness.

Very heavy on palate. Potent oakiness. Too much winemaking in this wine.

Young. Nice varietal character -- fruit and clean earthiness. Perfectly adequate.

Ah, best of the tasting. Nice fruit, spice, earthiness, and subtle oak on nose and palate. Smooth, finely textured tannins, nice weight and concentration, nothing overbearing. Good length and complexity.

Savoury, oaky and minerally. No fruit. Rich and full bodied.

Potent and earthy. Brooding. Hard to judge its future.

Always like the Kahu, as do my friends, so bought two. Also bought one PN.
Clean, sensation of sweetness although claimed to be <1 g/L RS, slightly bitter (in a good way), pleasant.

Oak, sharp acidity...

Earth and minerals in the foreground, fruit in the background. Oak, burnt match. Rich, long, complex.

Sharp acidity, harsh tannins, simple, missing the mid-palate. Expected better.

Late harvest, 50% botrytised. Sweet at 136 g/L RS, yet 12% alcohol. Crisp acidity to balance.

2004 Cabbage Tree Vineyard Pinot Noir 95 Points
New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa
I know this wine well. I was hoping to try the 2005 or 2006, but neither is ready for release, or even tasting. I did manage to persuade the Bulls to sell me the 2006, which they deem nearly ready for release. Okay, the 2004...it never disappoints. Ruby core and rim, moderately dense. Nicely complex and intense aromas and flavours of berryfruit, clean earth, roasted coffee/cacao. Smooth/ripe tannins, moderate acidity and alcohol. Nice palate weight and body. Very long and complex. Bought four.
