3 top tastes at N. Myrtle Beach

Introduction

We took a short MLK trip to the beach and I grabbed a few for the weekend. The weather was great, the course (Tidewater) was excellent even if I played like a hack but the wine was pretty sublime.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Murto Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Yooza, this is tasty. Not quite full bodied but pretty big. Asian spice, black fruits but still some mineral. Quite spicy and ripe. Tannins resolved but I would expect this to continue to evolve positively for several years.

I love it. Bob Wood...probably not so much....

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Bracing acidity on opening. First night some petrol. Lotsa honey and lemon of course. Cardamom. Rich and fairy complex if a bit disappointing compared to expectations. Night 2 and 3 more balanced and interesting and hopefully boding well for the future. Lovely but not mind expanding. I'll hold remaining bottles for a few years.

  • 2000 Mastroberardino Irpinia Naturalis Historia 94 Points

    Italy, Campania, Irpinia

    (1/19/2010)

Funky ass bottle. Why? Black as night, impenetrable. Mouth puckering tannins. Tar like biting a tire (in a good way). Built like a linebacker. Blackberry, Med spices (oregano, rosemary). On night 2, the tannins are a tad less aggressive, but the fruit even more deep, concentrated and rich, then brown sugar and overwhelming chocolate. What a wine! I'd love to have bottles for the next 20 years.

The Prum was good, the Pente was terrific but the Mastroberardino was WOTY so far.
