ORIGINAL: BRR Cool idea, MaineMark. I've been enjoying Vespers lately, but I use Lillet instead of Cocchi Americano. They're a great variation of the standard martini. I researched around before putting the menu together, and found that the Lillet called for in Casino Royale was Kina Lillet. (Here is the quote from the book: “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?”) However, Kina Lillet is no longer made. The various places I looked around suggested that the closest thing to Kina Lillet is actually Cocchi Americano, I guess because of the amount of of quinine in it, which apparently Lillet Blanc does not have. Honestly, I have never tasted the two variations, and certainly have not tasted them side-by-side. So, I can't even tell you which variation I prefer. But, I was intrigued by that extra bit of knowledge, so decided to go with the Cocchi Americano rather than the Lillet Blanc in my recipe. I admire the effort that you put into figuring this out. I'll have to try your version of this. I've had it with Lillet Blanc, and I wasn't a fan. I couldn't say whether it was the Lillet that made it taste off, or the specific brands of gin & vodka that didn't play nicely together, but it could be fun to play around with. What brands did you use in yours?
