There are two lessons are to be learnt from the following tale:

Went to visit some friends across the road at the weekend and took a reasonable bottle of Bordeaux with us.  Poured 4 glasses out - which finished the bottle.  Went to taste.  BEEEEEEEEERK!!!!!    Tasted of flowers and perfume and oil.

The scumbags wash their wine glasses in really powerfully scented washing liquid and the stuff just sticks to the glass - they dont bother rinsing the stuff off.  I basically had  a large glass of bordeaux/washing up liquid which is use to neither man nor beast.

The lessons learnt:
#1 It is ALWAYS better to take a £5 bottle of plonk to your neighbours for afternoon drinks than anything else.  The pigs will not appreciate anything decent anyway.
#2 Always make sure you have clean glasses for your wine.

On the 2nd point I always make sure our glasses are well kept and clean and before serving up wine generally have a sniff of the glass to see if it has become a bit musty from being stored upside down in the cupboard.

Rant over.  Thank you.

Paul,

That is one of my peeves.  Even with my own glasses, I always wash (plain hot water) and dry (with lint free microfiber) my glasses before pouring something nice.  Nothing ruins a nice wine like drinking it with dishwasher residue

Always wash, rinse and dry.  Have found that our water marks the Riedels if they're not dried.

Shame about the weekend wine - guess the weather made up for it?

Oh yeah Wrighty - there was about 1 hour of sunshine over the entire weekend.

I hate to think what the Olympics will be like in London in 4 years time - everyone will have to be issued with umbrellas and wellington boots.

Am sure the Chinese weather specialist can be hired - if there's any budget left.

I use Stem shine and the Riedel has water marks it they are left to dry on the stemware mat.  Been driving me crazy. Guess have to dry with microfiber cloth.

I wonder if there is a smal counter type product that could steam clean the glasses with no soap or residue and dry them - maybe for just 4-6 glasses at a time?

I found my wife wasn't being as diligent as I about drying the glasses, so we too have a bit of hard water spotting at the bottom of a few bowls. Anyone have a good way to get that clean? I've tried white wine vinegar thinking the mild acid would work, but it didn't. Nervous about trying something harsher like CLR, but can't serve wine to guests with these, maybe I just keep these two in reserve for my daily sipping pleasure.

Look for "flower sack towels" for drying / polishing your stems.

We run our stems through the dishwasher with no ill effects but we also do not use scented detergent on them and make sure to polish them with the flower sack towels when they come out, even if they already are dry from the drying cycle.    The hardness of your water will also contribute to the spottiness on the glasses.  We installed a good water softener when we purchased this house and it makes a huge difference.

I found this little product just called "bottle cleaner" at Amazing Grapes.  It's about 300 little BB's that you just swirl around with a little water in the bottom of your decanter (or glass) and it completely cleans it.  You just strain them back out and dry on a paper towel.  Get's rid of etching and soap scum/deposits, etc.  I think it was $6.

Those work pretty good for hard water stains and those type of deposits.  I have some but just don't use them anymore after getting the water softener.

best glass cleaner I found that rinses away oderless and tasteless is a little sodium percarbonate (about 1tblsp/gal) mixed in very hot water.  You can buy it as 5 Star PBW (Powder Brewery Wash), commonly used cleaning/sanitizing agent for home brewing.
