ORIGINAL: hankj I might be alone on this, but it seems to me that, given how bad some years have been even in modern history, 2020 was a blip on the bad year radar. It seemed incredibly bad because so many years before it were incredibly good. But for sure things coukd be way worse. Sure, things could be a lot worse. In general, we have things pretty easy compared with how things have been in the past, at least if you live in a developed country and have an okay job. War and famine are no longer constant threats, for one thing. For a 13th century peasant, modern life might look surprisingly close to their idea of the land of Cockaigne, a medieval fantasy world in which food was readily available without back-breaking hard labour. An article I read once argued that 536 AD was the worst year to be alive, so maybe avoid going there if you ever get hold of a time machine. Having said that, it is all somewhat relative. Most of us do tend to take ready availability of food for granted, and not without reason — that is (hopefully!) unlikely to change in the near future. It's been a pretty miserable year compared with how life has been over the past 50 years or so. It is important to realise it's been a difficult year for pretty much everyone, and take that into account. Maybe things could be worse, but they weren't great either. At the moment, I'm not holding out that much hope for 2021, if just because of the length of time required for vaccinations. I hope things will have improved by the end of 2021, and all the plans I had for 2020 (which were already quite delayed!) can finally happen then....
