A celebratory Champagne? A corked bottle of Pinotage? Aged vintage Port? Maybe a CT bottling?

Your mileage may vary.....

I would drink the best wine to say bye bye to the worst year and say " chinga tu madre 2020....go FY "

But since my palate and smell is still in recovery and I cannot distinguish between a boxed wine and a Harlan ( not that I had it before ! ) I think I will drink some of my favourite beers ( I am a lager guy so...no weird things for me) with my son. I had today quite a few beers since 10 am ( Quilmes, Baltika #5, Kross, Tiger, Tecate, and a couple more).

I am not opening a $100 bottle of wine if I cannot enjoy the nuances of it. For some weird reason today I started to detect better than yesterday the different flavors each beer had, so I am in the correct path.

Believe me when I tell you there are people that believe that think that tequila kills the virus....and I am not joking. Now, when I have a cold and I have a shot of tequila it definitely brings warmth to by body

"refermented" - it was a joke, like refried beans. Bob / fingers was referring to it. Man, that post was months ago!

A corked bottle of Pinotage sounds very 2020. I'll open something nicer though, not sure what, because I'm hoping 2021 will be an improvement on 2020 — eventually. It might take a while for things to improve though.

Well, the year was a TWO BUCK CHUCK. The fact that it is ending seems to deserve better.

Eduardo, as you remember we had COVID in October and my wife still does not have anything close to her sense of taste and smell back. I do and I was the very sick one. It is a confounding virus.

It is indeed a VERY confounding virus. Quite a few friends and people I know had already covid and it seems that everyone got hit in a very different way. All of them got well but quite a few had moderate symtoms and are still in recovery mode. All of my friends are inn their late 40´s or very early 50´s with no comorbidities that I am aware of other than mentally challanged. The worse covid was my doctor friend (M.D) and the best one (yet) was mine. 100 % got fever, thats the only symtom is unavoidable , but lack of smell and taste is 3 hit and one miss so far, but the one that got fever for 8 straight days and that is under surveilance and doing lung exercises did not lost smell or taste. My neighbor is an 85 year old woman that rents to me a house , she got covid in late august but she fared the virus very well. I had her on the protocol that I believe ( without solid science based proof...making it clear to not shake the nest here) and she is doing very well. Of course genes, viral load, and many other variables play here and with everyone of us. Tell your wife smell and taste will return, it can take a few more weeks though but she will get to drink her fav wines very soon

Edit: I started my neighbor on the protocol in early or mid February, so whatever she was missing from minerals or vitamins she had plenty of time to be prepared .

Oh for sure something really awful.

For the first Offline I ever attended, I brought a 1967 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco. It was way past it prime - so opaque that no light passed through it and it looked like mud. One of the attendees stated that it tasted like when you put a 9 volt battery on your tongue. Yep....That's the way to kick 2020 to the curb.

That reminds me of a 99% PI podcast I listened to about boredom where they put you in a room for 15 minutes and the only thing you had available to you was a button to press which gave you an electric shock that felt like a cat biting your leg. Most people tried it once or twice .... except for one guy who did it 200 times. Probably would have been a big hit in 2020.

I might be alone on this, but it seems to me that, given how bad some years have been even in modern history, 2020 was a blip on the bad year radar. It seemed incredibly bad because so many years before it were incredibly good. But for sure things coukd be way worse.

I'll drink a modest wine that I like with my wife and kid near, thankful for the vaccine and glad it wasn't WWIII.

Sure, things could be a lot worse. In general, we have things pretty easy compared with how things have been in the past, at least if you live in a developed country and have an okay job. War and famine are no longer constant threats, for one thing. For a 13th century peasant, modern life might look surprisingly close to their idea of the land of Cockaigne, a medieval fantasy world in which food was readily available without back-breaking hard labour. An article I read once argued that 536 AD was the worst year to be alive, so maybe avoid going there if you ever get hold of a time machine.

Having said that, it is all somewhat relative. Most of us do tend to take ready availability of food for granted, and not without reason — that is (hopefully!) unlikely to change in the near future. It's been a pretty miserable year compared with how life has been over the past 50 years or so. It is important to realise it's been a difficult year for pretty much everyone, and take that into account. Maybe things could be worse, but they weren't great either.

At the moment, I'm not holding out that much hope for 2021, if just because of the length of time required for vaccinations. I hope things will have improved by the end of 2021, and all the plans I had for 2020 (which were already quite delayed!) can finally happen then....

As it turns out, the wine I'm drinking tonight is 015 Château Du Grand Puch Bordeaux Supérieur "Cuvée Anne Laure". Not the best Bordeaux ever, but a pretty decent everday Bordeaux with all the complexity and savouriness you'd look for in such a wine. Only a few hours of 2020 left (it's nearly 9pm here), so fingers crossed 2021 will be better...eventually!

Starting with my favorite, Duetz NV Brut.

I just roasted some red peppers on the grill to go with a nice charcutier board we'll put together for dinner tonight. So, I guess we'll have a Brunello.

Started around 3:30 PM with some charcuterie and a 2005 Mondavi Reserve Cab. Plenty left in the decanter, but will probably need to open something different with the beef short rib Provencal braising in the Dutch oven. Perhaps a Bordeaux or a Super Tuscan. This is a no bubbly zone here.

We're doing lamb chops and scalloped potatoes, plus some miscellaneous snacks throughout the evening as well. Probably opening a 2012 Domaine de Ferrand Châteauneuf-du-Pape with dinner. We rarely open bubbly, but I have a 1/2 bottle of NV Bruno Paillard Champagne Brut Premiere Cuvée ready to go for toasting the new year.

How was the 09 Dom? I really liked it when I tried it. Certainly my cretin side is showing, but excellent champagnes from warm vintages are generally my favorite bubbles ...

I haven't tried enough vintage champagnes yet, but I'd expect I'd agree with you, if just because I tend to prefer champagnes with a bit of richness and vinosity.

It does remind me of some advice I was given a while ago, that generally you should look for warm vintages in cool climate regions and cool vintages in warm climate regions. Champagne's kind of a cool climate region, so that would be in accord with that advice. No doubt it's rather simplistic advice — wine is too complex for such simple truisms — but nonetheless it may have something to it.
