We have some of these, and just opened our first bottle. It's delicious, and unusual; and, delightfully, it's in a perfect drinking window now. However, it looks and tastes like a mixture of Pinot Noir and Syrah, even though the label claims that it was made from 100% Syrah grapes. I'm wondering if any of you have tried this, and had a similar impression (I've heard of Pinots tasting like Syrah, but never the reverse.)

My guess is that it's about 1/3 Pinot Noir, maybe a bit more. Anyone know any inside information about this wine?

Eddie, I am pretty sure it's 100% Syrah. It's a kickass wine for sure.

Agreed on both points: 100% Syrah, and it's good juice. I need to open a 2011.

It is definitely 100% Syrah, and I believe all Walla Walla.

I've had a number of Syrah's from WW, particularly Milton-Freewater Rocks area, that could be mistaken for a Pinot (and I'm talking OR rather than CA). In fact, my first Cayuse struck me as being much lighter in body than I expected.

This one was garnet-colored, so it even looked like a Pinot.

Life is pretty good here at Chez Eddie. We have about 2 dozen (maybe more) different labels of Syrah from the U.S. and the Rhone, and most of them (except the Cornases and Cote-Roties) are either in their drinking window, or shortly to achieve drinkability. We're going to have a tasty spring.

Oh, and I made the Reynvaan list.

2011 was my first vintage on the Reynvaan list. For 2012 I got a full allocation of 6 bottles of everything. I ordered a lot of bottles based on blind faith. I had a couple 2010s (from Full Pull) that I wanted to give more time to so I finally got around to buying a bottle of 2009 The Unnamed on the secondary market that I drank earlier this month. I was very pleased.

Personally, I kind of dig the lighter bodied graceful Syrahs over the full on bruisers that give you fatigue by the end of the bottle.

I have an interview with one of the Proper principals coming up on my blog in a few weeks, if anyone's interested. Interesting story, intriguing vineyard and great wines.

So, I went ahead and opened a bottle of the 2011 last night. I agree that the body of the wine is lighter than the 2010, but the nose and flavor on the palate were all Syrah to me.

I completely agree that it's in a happy drinking spot right now. I saved half the bottle, so I'll update this post after I revisit it tonight.

Despite my pestering on regular intervals, Proper is still not licensed to ship to Minnesota. I will get to try the 2011 and compare it to the 2010 in Spring when Damn Paul starts shipping again to this frigid wasteland. In the meantime, I still have a little over a case of 2010 that I am trying to drink slowly to see how it ages.

I have to ship through my sommelier friend in Ohio.

One of these days, someone will figure out a way to create a Star-Trek-style "transporter" that will ship wine directly to the customer. Then we'll be able to get what we want!
