No Girls
Outpost
quite possibly Saxum

Anyone else culling mailing lists these days?

Ditto on the Saxum. Although I haven't ordered QC in 3 or 4 years and I can't seem to get off their list.

I like Saxum. I just need a some time off. It's not them. It's me.

Outpost doesn't seem to cull. We have never really ordered and got the offer.

Schrader seems to give you a 1 year grace period. We got the offer another year after we stopped buying.

Not sure on the others.

Constant evolution of culling and adding and culling and adding. It's a bit scary though when you put the spreadsheet together of everything (a recent event which does tend to pre-empt more culling)

I also get the QC offer every year after not buying for at least 4-5 years - figure they must not have a waiting list anymore. Also get some out of the blue offers from ones that I was on the waitlist from a long time ago like Bryant and Harlan.

The only lists I still buy from are:

VHR
Drinkward Peschon
Arnot Roberts - Rose & Trosseau only now - but on the fence this year maybe outgoing
Sandlands - just made it for the 2nd wave this year - bought what they offered - so reasonable

Ones that dropped me immediately after not buying:
Saxum
Abreu
Scarecrow

There is only 1 list I order from every single time, everything offered and ask for more to boot. SQN. Everything else has or can be cut. Period.

Don't know the others well enough, but if I was on Schrader or No Girls I'd get out of those too.

I think i'm done with:
Horsepower
Gramercy
Sanguis
Force Majuere (too much in the cellar and not a good QPR anymore)
Keplinger
Sojourn
Myriad
Liquid Farm

Cutting way back on Dirty & Rowdy and Cruse Wine, just too much in the cellar

The majority of my culling happened last year just so I could buy so much '15 Riesling and some '14 Burgundy. This year I went the opposite way (regression if you wish to call it that) and again ordered Outpost True Vineyard and Rivers-Marie. I guess that means I had skipped them last year instead of culled them from the list, eh?

May keep Becklyn and Back cat... dunno

I'll buy some Harrington (super cheap, but good stuff), but there is no list, and some Castelli nebbiolo when that comes out, but thats it.

S1............I'm sure you could go in on somebody else's Outpost (or any other) allocation if they did drop you. I'm sure there are other CTer's in your area that you could piggyback on. If not I'm happy to order some extra Outpost for you and we'd just have to figure out how to get them out to you. It can be done. I've dropped all of my wine clubs since I don't have a job. I was a Foxen Wine Club Member for many years. I'm seeing a lot of their wines locally now so I can still get them. I'm still on the mailing list for Outpost and Quivet but that is it right now.

So new to the allocation thing that I haven't been dropped from any list.

I am getting a second-year offer from Kosta Browne this year. Really not sure what I will do. Am interested in some of the offer, but my frugal mind is challenging $70 or so per bottle. Even for PN. And if I get dropped, there are always other offers coming.

There is an attraction to staying on lists to see how past loyalty will be rewarded, but is that enough for me to keep buying a bit each year? That is:

Dilemma Cheers!

Schrader does give you a 1 year skip. I confirmed that with them before passing this year. So far no other outgoing…yet. Though do have some candidates that will not make the cut coming up.

Well, until this morning it was looking like my wife and I were going to drop every list we were on. Since her lung transplant, we have been adjusting to all the meds she has to take. One of those is an anti-fungal called Noxafil. On Medicare Part D, the copay is $1500 per month! That would destroy the wine budget. Was afraid we were going to be reduced to an occasional two-buck Chuck (heaven forbid). But learned this morning that we were accepted in the Merck assistance program, which reduces that cost considerably. So now I can order some Carlisle and Epoch. And some Berserkerday gems.

Hey Bob so glad you figured out a way to get the medication without going broke in the process. Hope all works out for your spouse.

Drink a toast from the next bottle of fine wine you open to Martin Shkreli's prison sentence!

I dropped Saxum a couple of years ago... it took two years of not ordering to not receive an offer.

This year I've culled:

Sandlands
Proper

On the bubble for later in the year:

Ultramarine
Villa Creek
Reynvaan (this one is actually decided)

This one hurt a little, considering how good their Old Vine and Monto Rosso Zins are.

Dropped in the last year or two:
Schrader (I made the list last year and did not order, no offer this year, so dropped)
Quivet
Carlisle (love the wines but they are very similar to Bedrock which I buy)
Roy Piper
Liquid Farm
Skipping Myriad, Bedrock (probably) and Vincent this year, but not dropping. I have too much in stock now and need to spread the love.

There are a lot of wineries who's list I signed up for but never bought from, so I will not even list them.

I am buying less from all lists this year so I can focus more on Old World wines.

I’m not on a ton of lists. Dropped Kapcsandy (style), Harlan/Bond (price), got dropped by Thomas (some issue when I went on sabbatical, but I have a lot of his wine...). In fact I could buy Kapcsandy and Harlan and Bond on the open market, at the same and sometimes, at lower prices.

Currently buying directly from VHR, Sineann, Arnot-Roberts. Recently bought a few bottles from Bevan, might stay on that list, although honestly they may not really be allocating.

There are some, like MacDonald, that I would order from if I was offered an allocation..

I’ve dropped all clubs but two: Chateau Margene and McPrice-Myers, which I may also excuse in 2018. I still enjoy those wines when my palate is in that mood, but I have enough backfilled to last since I more commonly drink OW stuff these days.

The only “list” I was ever on was Maison Ilan, hence my hesitation to commit to any more. Besides, the world of wine is so broad and so deep, and I can find pleasure from so many sources, that I don’t feel like being locked in to any one producer forever.
Except maybe, Huet

Many of the ones we will buy from will be smaller amounts than previous years. All those we’re definitely not buying are wine makers that are well represented in the cellar and I’m happy about those purchases. Reasons for not buying vary from too rigid “club” rules to rising prices or we just have enough.

With regards the latter reason, there’s just lots of great stuff to seek out, especially OW (not really palate shift as we are omnivores and are constantly changing it up).

The question marks will be game day decisions based on the status of our budget. Not sure we wouldn’t buy any of them in the future if/when we get offers 2019 and beyond.

The Clubs can be irritating. I joined because I loved their wines, but then they send me weird varietals or blends I do not like, and do not send me the wines I loved. Plus some clubs send multiple shipments (e.g. 3 bottles 4 times a year) and then hit you with $13/bottle S&H charges.

So I find myself wanting to reduce my winery direct purchases and do a bit more impulse shopping at local stores. Particularly for daily drinkers.

I agree, there will always be great wine available, often at a friendly tariff. I don't know what OW stands for.

We've gotten in the habit of an annual trip to Napa so I look at some of our buying as also an investment in that trip. For the wines that we already buy from the list means we don't have to buy anything when there and can try what we've gotten and have a pleasant time. Some places (Colgin, BOND) don't even want to sell you anything during that time!

But yes - there prob does need to be some culling. Trying to buy more ready to drink and auction and of course need the money for the OW stuff as well.
