So this thread might get banned, but saw this chart in WS today and thought it was worth a post here since it is about wine well sort of...

The only thing I get out of this slide is both parties drink loads of crappy wine.

This is very funny

I can see Jack Daniel's and Grey Goose having large spheres - but Sutter Home?

I think folks like us probably don't drink enough of any one particular label to make it into such a chart.

I was going to say we don't drink any of those bubbles and then I noticed that there is one for Champagne (presumably all Champagne - not producer dependent) on the chart.

I was particularly amused by the presence of Smoking Loon on the chart.

They don't specify whether the drinkers polled were the voters so the correlation cannot be interpreted. Total consumption percentages left big holes which I attributed to democratic beer drinkers.

Very interesting. So among the wine drinkers, the hands-down extremists are Smoking Loon liberals and Mondavi conservatives. I sorta get the Smoking Loon connection and it's irreverent approach. But what makes Mondavi so stodgy as to only appeal to republicans?

Do you have a link for that?

Edit: Never mind, I found it:

Well, I must be messed up. I like Dos Equis and Sam Adams. And Red Zin and Cab. And Syrah and Merlot. Oh well, so much for charts!

Taking this thread in a somewhat different direction, what about all of the past / present efforts to "label" wine with so many warnings that it is little more than a cigarette package with liquid inside? Do we think wine should follow the European "it's a health food in moderation" example, or should we go the route of "it's a poison that can cause all sorts of maladies" route?

Based on what I hear, even France government has become somewhat anti-wine even though it is their major export!

Not far away...you will likely have to provide proof of age and sign a waiver to buy cheese, candy, wine, beer, red meat, if they are not banned completely! Only veggies will not require a waiver....

Funny since many of the vegetables sold in the US barely resemble vegetables and are full of many more nasties than anything else on the list.

Always makes me think of the scene in "Thank you for smoking" where they bring out the community activist to testify that because cigarette labels don't have warnings in Spanish, it is proof that cigarette companies are racist, and want all spanish-language people to die. We are truly labeled and regulated to death!!

The US is such a pathetically litigious society - I'd think that some of the labeling is aimed at covering butts, so to speak. I've been told by people from England and Mexico that quite a few of the more frivolous or money-grubbing lawsuits in the US would be derisively laughed out of court in their countries.

No question that alcohol can have some bad effects, both by the 'acute' route as well as the 'chronic.' But does a label on the bottle mean anything, really?
