Can't update to Excel - 5/21/2014 7:02:20 PM

After exporting my wines to Excel for the last 3 years I am now getting this message when I try to update Excel: "The address of this site is not valid. Check the address and try again." The query address is my desktop. I have no idea how that happened. When I do a new export, the "refresh data" option is grayed out and there is only a single tab titled "My Cellar". Can I manually add the correct query address? Thanks.

It is pretty clear per this thread: https://www.cellartracker.com/forum/tm.asp?m=328836

Either turn off background refresh or download a new spreadsheet. I am sorry Excel sucks. I worked at Microsoft for 13 years. I love MSFT. I tried. Excel still does suck for web queries. That is a point of fact.

Thanks for your reply. I had checked that previous post before I started this post but I didn't think it applied to me. I tried turning off the background refresh but a dialog box popped up with a warning of "A query with this name already exists". I downloaded OpenOffice and and tried export again but only a single sheet was exported and the location and bin, the most important items for me, weren't there. Even in all of the options available to export I didn't see location and bin. I'm sure whatever improvements you made a couple of weeks ago helped many users and though Excel may be poor at web queries, for me what was once a pretty seamless and easy to use spreadsheet is of no value now.

However, I made and saved a search that would do what I need so I that will be what I use from now on. Again, thanks for your time.

Please email us your spreadsheet. We will fix it.

So apparently you did not notice the huge, red warning that Excel shows me with your file:
quote:

PROTECTED VIEW: Office has detected a problem with this file. Editing it may harm your computer. Click for more details.

The file is corrupt. Excel thinks it has been hacked maliciously. Thus it will not load the web queries. This has nothing whatsoever to do with CellarTracker.

Your have two choices: 1) ignore the warning and hope for the best or 2) just download a fresh spreadsheet from CT entering your handle and password.

I did the latter and emailed it to you.

Eric, Please don't think I would knowingly send you a bad file. That warning never popped up when I opened Excel. Being a corrupt file may explain why I couldn't update it. Though I tried exporting several more times
I could only export a single page at a time and there was no login page. I couldn't update it and would have to do a new export every time.

But you did the heavy lifting and sent me a copy of my complete multipage export just as I had before and WooHoo! it works perfectly just as it did before. Though I like to solve puzzles and really dislike an unsloved puzzle, I think I will let this one go. And if my file gets screwed up again I'll just ask you to send me a copy LOL. Thanks again.

OK. To be clear, all that I did was download a fresh copy of http://www.cellartracker.com/webquery.xls and enter your handle and password on the first tab.

And if I may be clear there was only a single page when I did an export and there was no login page. My old Excel copy and the new one you sent me had 11 sheets (tabs) with a login page (tab). We are not having the same export. I tried it on a different computer and still got only a single page. I'm sending you 2 screen shots.

When I selected the webquery address you sent everything works. Is this the same as the export button on Cellartracker? We may be talking apples and oranges here.

You are confusing the legacy Excel spreadsheet with the CSV export that is integrated directly into the site. This is all explained here:

https://www.cellartracker.com/content.asp?iContent=38

The one screenshot with no tabs is just a CSV export to Excel of a particular view.

Eric, it's been so long since the first time I did this I assumed I was using the export button. I downloaded the Excel sheets only once and never had to do it again. I just kept updating. On the export button I have an option to select an Excel format. Just opposite that is only a single option "Only wines on this page". Was there ever a 2nd option to export the entire Mycellar? Just wondering how I got the very 1st export that worked so well. After lots of post and emails all is OK. Thanks for your patience.

Here are the first few sentences.
quote:

The easiest way to export to Excel is to click MY CELLAR and then look for the EXPORT button at the upper right. The site will let you choose which records and which columns to export and whether to download as text or CSV.

Alternatively, there is also a legacy Excel tool you can download.

I read it the 1st time you sent it. Thanks. I think we can consider this case closed. Bye.

All we ever used to have was the LEGACY tool. For years. Most people couldn't even figure out how to enter their handle and password. I have fielded hundreds of questions over the years.

When we launched our new site, we simply added an integrated EXPORT button. They are entirely unrelated. This latter tool is simple but less powerful.

You have conflated the two. I thought my FAQ was pretty clear that there are two things, but I guess not since we have this whole thread.
