The unit I keep hearing named is CellarPro.
So I bought one, but it is not installed yet.
It was surprisingly expensive.

I bought a CellarPro 1800XTS last fall when I built my permanent basement cellar, and with the escalating summer temps I am just now getting it fired up. No doubt it was pretty expensive but so is the cellar full of wine I am protecting. In a few hours so far today it cooled my room down almost 10 degrees, and I am at the limit of the unit's capacity around 400 cu. ft.

As long as it is reliable I am fine with the cost. The unit seems nicely built and I was able to customize it for my application. It definitely is pumping some heat into my basement as it cools my cellar down!

I'm holding steady at around 400. I don't have any desire to reach 500 let alone 1,000. With great wine friends in NYC-area and around the country, I'm just an offline away from trying wines that I may not have. Right now, my purchases are focused on maintaining current levels or having more interesting wines to bring to offlines.

I think you have my address if you want to go ahead and send me my "IOU one Wake Cellar Pass".

Instead of inching below my goal of 500, I aquired 8 cases of Berserker PGC and various summer whites and Rosé to push me over 600.

I'm actually heading downward ... Started the year with 585, now at 502.

Goal is 450 ... No real reason.

This is too true. I only have 7 bikes and 2 of them are the wife's. (This was the early version of cellar reduction when I moved to NYC) I am generally vague as to costs on these things.

Anyone want to buy a vintage Vitus? I could sell it to buy wine after all. :)

I'm shrinking from ~1300 toward a target of 800 or so. Mainly to fit the space I have. Currently at 1075 so still a ways to go. But I've been pulling some killer wines this year and the cellar's still full.

Hey Chris, you just missed winning the Bentley for being the 9000th forum user. You came in at 9001

A fellow named Dave (handle: ldh) was #9000. He only posted in the Support Forum so he doesn't win the car either

Welcome to both new forumites!

Haven't hit the 1000 mark yet. I am limited by storage space. If and when we ever do the closet conversion to a cellar I might have room for 1200. I doubt I would ever go over that. We have been holding pretty steady in the 800's including pendings for at least a few years now and it is serving us well.

exactly the same for me and HRH

I want to be like HRH and S1 when I grow up. Maintaining something in the 800-1000 zone.
I've passed 800, so now the trick is to not pass 1000.

ben

Ha, ha - 800 to 1000 happens quickly so pay attention! (Happened to me but I'm back in the 900s again.)
As to being like S1....start by getting yourself a wine drinking dog....

I got up to close to 1100 three years ago but an eight month moratorium and more selective buying habits have me at about 950 now, which is still over my capacity. Fortunately, the root cellar at my mom's serves well as a place for delivery and short term holding.

What would I do with a Bentley anyway? There's no SCCA racing class to run it in.
OTOH, If the prize was cases of first growth Bordeaux from the 20th century I'd be seriously disheartened.

I've posted an earlier version of this before, but this is a fun (??!!?) exercise to chart cellar growth.  Not directly available in CT, but easy to deduce based on numbers of purchased and consumed bottles sorted by time, broken down by month, then plugged into Excel.    My cellar growth coincided with a) joining CT at end of 2009, then went wildly out of control when b) I finished my physical cellar in late  2011.  Pretty steep jump from ~700-~1100.  Of course I continued buying/making beyond that physical boundary, but have reigned part of that back in over past year or so.  Making the decision to not add my 2013 homebrew to the CT inventory has helped a lot this year.

Our inventory (counting pending bottles) has historically gone up and down across the 100-bottle mark but has stayed consistently over that and closer to 110 recently. This is only true as long as you don't count the ~23 cases from the barrel project I did last year (for which I need to find space in the next month or so).

Congrats Hollowine! (I guess??) :-) I used to embarrassingly tell my non wine friends that I had about 1000 bottles when I had about 1100 or 1300 (just rounding down). I am now just north of 1500...... Not a good sign......

Those numbers sound eerily familiar. Glad we can share this kind of misery with each other.

That's it!

I have a new plan to stay below 1000.
I just won't count any wine I buy directly from wine producers on wine lists (because it's sort of automatic) or any daily drinkers (because I'm just going to drink them right away anyway).
I'm still cramped for cellar space, but my bottle count is now under control.

It's sort of like going on a diet, but not counting any fat that accumulates in your butt.
After you weigh yourself, you sit on the scales, and subtract that from your total weight (because it's behind you, you can't see it).
"Man, I'm loosing weight fast on this new Denial Diet".

I think I have the solution: off-site storage.

The wife doesn't have to know about what she can't see. So, store some of it in my cellar. I'm glad to help out. Of course, there will be a few "carrying charges."

Exactly!  Not counting pending CT Barrel projects is also a good idea.  They are still way off in the future, so why bother cluttering your data!

My space justification for the non-inclusion is that I'm not putting any 2013 Goat Rocks in my physical cellar(s).  They are currently still in my "winery" and will be going on a palette to a friend's cool warehouse here shortly.
