Happy Hour yesterday, first, Holy Mountain Ceremony Farmhouse Pale Ale. Flavorful but easy drinking. Then, Fremont / Breakside SBW Collaboration-Back to the Future IPA, made especially for Seattle Beer Week on right now. Very tasty !!! Heading out now to find more of these special beers for FFP. Cheers, Ed

Dave, drink half the glass, then top off with Guinness. *Poof* you've got a "Black and Tan.'

2013 Almanac Sourdough Wild Ale - USA, California (5/20/2015)
-- tasted non-blind over approx. 90 min. --
-- 375mL bottled in February 2013 --

NOSE: smells like a Saison with a healthy dose of lemon and a hint of clementine orange.

BODY: yellow-orange color; still has a bead, which produces a thin-but-persistent whitish head; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: airy/frothy mouthfeel; earthy/grassy/hay; strong green banana flavor on the mid palate and also on the finish; I'm enjoying this now, but I believe I preferred it when it was younger.

Rochefort 10, aged 3 1/2 years in my cellar. In love. I have the 8, that has aged just as long and I'm doubting I'll be able to make it through the summer without opening it. had to light a Davidoff Nicaragua Toro. Had to...

While down in State College I really enjoyed a few beers that were on tap all over the area. Dog Fish Apri-hops which wasn't too sweet or too bitter but quite enjoyable. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did. Still the Anchor Steam in 28 oz mugs was really tops. Good food and beer at reasonable prices. A new one for me.

Elysian The Immortal IPA. Very hoppy and dry; this is a classic IPA.

I know some of my fellow Seattleites hate the sale of Elysian, but to my knowledge all the same folks are still making the beer.

Doug I actually really enjoy Black and Tans. Boddington's with Murohy's is really good.

I was just introduced to Elysian last week. I was really impressed by their Space Dust IPA. I also had the Savant, which didn't quite measure up. Earlier today, I picked up a bottle of the Avatar Jasmine IPA, which I'll probably open at some point this weekend.

Tim, it's always good to hear about such magnificently historical brews, now with the addition of history in your cellar. Rochefort 10 .... Man, that is a heavy-hitter, in just the right way.

Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company (West Virginia) 'Mothman Black IPA' 8.0 out of 10. Had not had a "black IPA" before. For me, it was like a good "normal" pale or blonde IPA mixed with a sweet and good stout or porter. I would drink it again, but would really prefer to drink the dark stouts and porters separately, as well as the light-colored pale ales.

DuClaw Brewing Company (Maryland) 'Sweet Baby Jesus! Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter' 8.4 out of 10. Massive smell of malt, caramel, chocolate, peanut butter, coffee and tobacco. Quite good. The taste fell off a little, but still pleasurable indeed - dry rootbeer, tobacco, chocolate, peanut butter. A controlled sweetness, nice "dessert" drink.

Warsteiner Premium German Pilsener. 7.8 out of 10. Restrained, centered, balanced - if there is an analogy with wines being "over-extracted," this is the opposite, lightly floral and bitter hops up front, tending toward a somewhat sweeter finish of malt and muted citrus. While some beers are fairly overpowering with flavor and inventive micro-brewing techniques, this one is in a "safe zone," and you would want to drink a whole bunch of these, while with some of those others, it would be a tall order. Well okay - some of us would want to drink a whole bunch of these. Very pleasing and easy to drink, 4.8% alcohol.

Murphy's Irish Stout, the "draught style" with the nitrogen widget in the can. 9.2 out of 10. So smooth, velvety, silky, creamy.... It's just slightly lighter in color than Guinness, and perhaps just a tad less bitter, somewhere in there...? A very solid and refined dry stout, lighter mouthfeel than many, a pleasing minerality, faint coffee, chocolate, a hint of sweet caramel, chalk and a good bit of dry cocoa. Stouts don't quite turn my crank as do India Pale Ales, so there's probably .5 or .6 off for that. As an easy-drinking (4% alcohol) stout, this is a sure winner.

Ski - Love Elysian beer ! We are close to their brewpub in Tangeltown. Visit often, maybe too often. But we were out in Poulsbo this week. Stopped at Sound Brewery and picked up a few bombers. Very impressed with their quality. We did all 3 IPA's and then their Stout. Excellent ! Try it. Cheers, Ed

Ed, that sounds perfect - a selection of IPAs and then a Stout - YUM!

Fun article about beer in WA today... http://www.seattletimes.com/life/travel/take-a-hike-have-a-beer-life-is-perfect-heres-where-2/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=article_bottom

I enjoyed my visit to ATL, and did enjoy a local Sweetwater Brewing 420 Ale.  BUT overall ATL seemed to have a distinct lack of craft brew culture that I've come to love and expect in my west coast jaunts.

I only ate out at 3-4 places so maybe not a fair sample, but for example the Buffalo Wild Wings in Oxnard, CA and Yakima, WA each have dozens of local brews on tap.  The one in ATL had nothing local, and a sparse selection of craft brews.  I drank a Red Hook.

My wife and I hosted a blind IPA and Potato Chip tasting party at our house on Sunday. Here was the lineup:

Wander Brewing AAA IPA (Bellingham)
10 Barrel Brewing Easy Black IPA (Portland, OR)
Boneyard RPM IPA (Bend, OR)
Breakside Brewing Wanderlust IPA (Portland, OR)
Laurelwood Workhorse IPA (Portland, OR)
Stone Enjoy By 7.4.15 IPA (San Diego, CA)
Stone Ruination Double IPA (San Diego, CA)
Kona Brewing Castaway IPA (Kona, HI)
Two Beers Brewing Forester Double IPA (Seattle, WA)
Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA (Delaware)
Gigantic Brewing IPA (Portland, OR)
Pfriem IPA (Hood River, OR)
Iron Horse Dry-Hopped IPA (Ellensburg, WA)
Schooner Exact Evergreen IPA (Seattle, WA)
Fremont Brewing The Sister Imperial IPA (Seattle, WA)

My favorites were the Pfriem, Stone Enjoy By, and Breakside Wanderlust. Honorable mention to Boneyard RPM and Iron Horse. Bottom for me was the Fremont, Dogfish Head, and Kona.

FWIW, the five chips we tasted blind: Lays original, Tim's Cascade, Lays Kettle Cooked, Safeway Select brand, and Kettle Chips wavy. Kettle Cook lays won by a small margin. We did this portion so all of the kids (2-7 years old) could participate and have fun, too. Mrs. BRR had a paper tablecloth down on a low table so each kid could write his/her name next to his/her favorite bowl of chips. Lots of salty fun.

Brandon, great idea with the potato chips.

Once again I'm struck by how many brews are produced out west in the US, and how they are often not available in the east. I usually try all the IPAs that a place has, and of your list I've only come across the Dogfish Head 90 Minute - didn't think it was all that great, either. Stone Brewery does manage to get some into eastern Ohio, close to where my employer is located, so there's a little hope...

Last night, for dessert, an Oil Man bomber from Elevation Brewing Company in Colorado, bourbon barrel aged. This was big time beer: licorice, tar, tobacco, sweet malt, coffee and chocolate with a hint of bourbon. I need more. Cheers, Ed

Ed, great description there. Colorado scores again.

Reminds me of some big, sweet stouts I've had - it's a miracle how they get so much in there. Probably best for dessert, too, i.e. most aren't going to sit there, drinking them all day.

Samuel Adams Double Agent IPL. 8.2 out of 10.

I'm usually wary of such things - this is like a mix of a lager and an IPA, and so often the brewery is trying to get cute and/or please everybody, and they end up pleasing almost no one. Yet this one has turned out pretty well indeed. Smells slightly hoppy, with tropical fruits and grapefruit. Clean malt taste, pine resin, light fruits and some menthol on the back end. Could drink a lot of this.

Tried the Unibroue LaTerrible Belgian Dark Ale over the weekend...Wow! That was one great beer! And at $10 for a bomber, a couple bucks cheaper than my favorite Belgian Quads. Will DEFINITELY stock up!

This may be a little thread drift, but I am now pursuing cider. I picked up a Two Towns Bad Apple that was on the tart side and very refreshing on these hot days.

I'd welcome some good cider recommendations. I've tried a couple recently--don't recall the names--that were exactly that: crisp and refreshing on a hot day.

Missed the boat on IPA day yesterday and had a bottle of Weihenstephaner Vitus.

"World's Best Beer" as rated by the 2011 World Beer Awards? Maybe not to me, but then again 1) I'm not that regular of a beer drinker, and 2) I'm picky with wheat beers to begin with. I did like this, though - good balance, nice malt notes, and not quite as ester-y as I expected from some of the online reviews I read.
