Another weekend, another big dinner 8 of got together at a friend's in Arlington, VA for a Burg/Champagne and a touch of Rioja dinner to celebrate a couple people's birthdays... 1987 and 1948. Great dinner with some amazing wines which seemed all mostly correct. Man, this was a good lineup. Some of these wines are up there for my WOTY. 1990 VC La Grand Dame, really pretty light red fruits, powerful, juicy, still a bit tart 1995 Charles Heidsieck Bland de Millenaires (original paper label) - powerful chardonnay flavors, brioche, light ox, great complexity. #1 White/Champagne 1996 Amiot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Les Caillerrets - solid bottle quite good, but it took a while to come around 1948 Marquis de Murrieta Ygay Reserva #2 Red - I'll probably remember this the longest. What a ride. Man this was crazy good. Started with really stinky rotten nose, but it had strong sweet dried strawberry middle (rioja get this when very very old) and dazzling complexity. After an hour the stink went away and the fruit was muted. Then at 3 hours, the fruit and complexity roared back with even stronger more complex fruit, mature woodsy notes with a insanely long finish. 97 1987 Faiveley NSG 1er Les St. Georges - really good for a weak vintage, clean bottle. classic aged burg. 1987 Faiveley Corton clos de Corton - My favority early on, but fell off after a few hours. Really good, classic aged flavors, but had a complexity and deepness of flavor along with a very "thick" nouthfeel. 1987 Armand Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze #1 Red So we were really bummed when we first opened this cause the cork was corky, but the wine was clean (whew!). Wow, this was amazingly elegant, light with great fruit, lightly mature notes, nothing out of place and everything in balance. This might be one of the most elegant, gorgeoux burgs I've ever had. Would love to taste this when it gets fully mature. but this will probably be the only tasting I'll ever have of this rare wine. 1989 Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze - A complete change from the Rousseau. Mostly still primary, just very light mature notes. Pretty closed on the nose. This is still really young, burly, muscular, and tight but started to soften a bit after about 4 hrs open. Tannins were a still pretty big and the fruit is still pretty monolithic. I would hold this for 10 more years before trying again. A great potential down the road once more mature notes emerge and the tannins soften. 1991 Remoissenet pere and fils Richebourg - Again, more elegant, but I felt that this was a bit shy. Never really opened up over 6 hours. Nice wine, but I think it needs more time. 1999 Girardin Bonnes Mares - 2nd time I've had this in the last few years. Very similar to last tasted in 2021. More the elegant and light side of Bonnes Mares. Quite a beautiful wine. Held together all night and didnt change too much. People didnt think this was a long ager, but I think it will hang around for another 15 years. 1986 Yquem (1/2 btl) Powerful, relatively youthful Yquem. Gained weight over a couple hours, but had a bit of a short finish. 1996 Climens _Not quite as powerful as the Yquem. Good, but not as good as the Yquem, has a similar short finish. Bonus Tastes: 1996 Lafite, 1996 Mouton Rothschild stored in fridge with vacuvin for 2 days. Lafite was really closed, Mouton was pretty open and mostly ready for people who like their bordeaux at early maturity
