Do you enjoy visiting wineries and vineyards?

I am building a new interactive wine map called Vinimap (vinimap.com), which lets you discover nearby wineries by comparing wine critic scores. I just released the second version which includes wineries and wine reviews from 37 new countries, making a grand total of 43 countries and over 12500 wineries!

The first version started out with France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Austria, but some of the latest additions include the US, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and many more.

In the next version I’m planning to add descriptions, photos, opening times, categories, varietals, appellations and designations.

I hope this is something of interest to this community. Feel free to let me know in case you have any additional suggestions on things to include in the next release!

Looks like an interesting idea, thanks for sharing. This could be useful once it's more complete.

Are you planning to incorporate critics' scores from sources other than Wine Enthusiast? It would be nice to see some other perspectives too.

Also, as an aside, the number of reviews listed on your site doesn't always match the number on Wine Enthusiast. I checked a few wineries near me. E.g., Kossler in San Paolo, BZ, Italy lists one review on your site but the page on Wine Enthusiast linked to provides 16 reviews. A minor detail, I guess, but maybe worth checking!

Actually, more annoyingly, sometimes unrelated reviews are included. For example, Graham's Port in Villa Nova di Gaia, Portugal (listed on your site as Osborne) links to quite a number of reviews, the first few of which are for unrelated wines from other countries that happen to have 'Osborne' in their name or in the review text.

Thank you for your feedback!

I am planning to incorporate more critic scores later on. I chose WE to start with but will be adding more sources soon. I'm actually planning to incorporate a user review system as well.

And thanks for the heads-up regarding the (Kossler/Graham's Port) reviews / review numbers, I will look into it and make some updates soon.

Seems like quite a good resource -- I poked it a few times and the results look great. But I also see that a bunch of obvious wineries are missing in the areas I know best. For example, focusing purely on the Fingerlakes, I'm not seeing Forge Winery, Ryan Williams, Leidenfrost or the new Hillock and Hobbs. Further north, I don't see Ravines or Boundary Breaks.

So for whatever reason, your selection seems to omit the wineries I actually buy wines from (and consider to be hands-down the best in that area) but shows some really terrible touristy places where the wines are plonk. This has me wondering how the selection got done -- I assume they couldn't all be paying to be listed, because you already have way too many shown for that to be how it worked. All the wines I mentioned are reviewed in the "usual places" from time to time, and all are in CellarTracker's database, so I'm not seeing that being the explanation either...

Same with Israel. My friend Yagil is a total nut who knows every single boutique producer in the country. Most of the places he took me aren't shown yet at a minimum, you would find his TNs and mine in CT for those wineries (Garage de Papa, Castel, Margalit, Tzora, places like that). Over in Italy, I love Barola and Brunello but again, not seeing many of those.

Can you share a bit of the algorithmic side of this and help me understand the approach?

Thank you for your feedback, Ken.

To shed some light on the selection of wineries: I have simply been looking at wineries with WE ratings and then tried to locate them. Of course there are many more wineries out there than the ~12500 which are included in this initial version of the application. I'm aiming to expand on this in the upcoming months and will certainly look into your recommendations.

I bet there are! I would just include all the wineries where a wine ended up in CellarTracker and where you can localize it from a web site. But of course some places can be visited and some can't. No point in giving location or contact information for Rayas in CDP, for example: your users might literally be shot (rock salt, but said to be incredibly painful!)

Would you like the locations of some very small producers in Austria as well as the Balkans and Causcasus?

Agreed. CT is a pretty comprehensive resource for this. The painful part would be associating winery names and profiles with GPS locations

Linking to reviews on CT would also be very useful.

I bet! Sounds like it would be best to buy their wine from a retailer a safe distance away . There is the saying "rubbing salt into the wound" for a reason: it's painful. Being shot with rock salt would presumably really hurt, even if it wasn't actually life threatening.

It would be great if you could work with Eric Levine and incorporate Cellartracker scores, and links. I find that in many cases, the Cellartracker scores align better with my experiences than the "expert" scores do.

We generally visit a winery when we travel. I have visited vineyards in Burgundy, New Zealand, Chile and Greece, some are on your map, but many are not. Most of the tours seem to be regularly scheduled, although I am not certain if 'drop ins' are appropriate for all. Basically, I could reach out to the tour operators and give them your contact info. I can also send your contact for some vineyard tours in Peru. So what is a good contact, if you want that?

This tends to vary between wineries and regions. Some may accept walk-ins for tasting in their tasting room and require bookings for larger groups. Some may accept walk-ins for tastings, but also offer a guided tour of the winery or vineyard that requires a booking. Some may require bookings for all tastings.

In Burgundy, for example, I've found that wineries in the Côtes de Beaune often accept walk-ins, while this is rarer in the Côtes de Nuits. Even then, there are many exceptions to the rule either way!

This kind of information would be useful to have on the map, ideally, so that users know whether it is worth turning up at a winery without booking.

Also, in France, the Vignerons Indépendants website would be another useful source of winery names and details.

@penguinoid @Ken @Blue Shorts - These are all very good suggestions, thank you, I'll look into it!

@annerk - I'd be keen to hear about those small producers in Austria, the Balkans and the Causcasus, if you can send me as much info as you have I'll try to include them in the next release!
@grizzlymarmot - that would be fantastic, feel free to share my contact details with them.

My email address is timo@vinimap.com, that's probably the easiest way to reach me.
