Seems like I've run low on Italian wines that are perfect for pasta, pizza, and tomato based dishes. Anyone have any favorites that don't break the bank for sangiovese, montepulciano, barbera, nero d'avola, valpolicella, or nebbiolo? I prefer lower alcohol wines, love fruit but definitely want some complexity and earthiness to it, <$30 a bottle.

...might not jump some of your hurdles, but we fell across an Italian grape from Southern Italy/Puglia called Susumaniello. Went a treat with pizza and a host of Italian type dishes at a garden bash. It was a pleasant surprise and is a regular re-order now. Any number of wines out there and in your neck of the woods , probably €$10 - 12 , im guessing, but don't let that stop you giving it a go.

Chianti, chianti and chianti. That about covers it for pasta, pizza and red sauce.

Monsanto Chianti FTW!

Great reviews. But also a really good wine for sub $25.

I mean, there are sooooo many.

* Tons of Etna rosso's like Passopisciaro, Terre Nere, Anna Maartins and others at good prices.
* Good Frappatos (other than Occhipinti) in the under $30 category like Cos and others
* I mean I lost track of all the Barberas..
* Lots of coop nebbiolos at good price points
* As people said, lots of good Chiantis, but I think most Chiantis like Monsanto, Selviapiana, Felsina and others need 10+ yrs
* Montepulciano, but there are lots of plonk here, I would stay with quality producers like Tiberio, but they need a few years.
* Sardinian grenache, known as Cannonau... this generally fits the bill.
* Teroldego, lots of good producers, but some are spendy.
* other regions in the heel that make Nero D'avola, or Negromaro, and primitivo,

I mean, swing a dead cat in italy and you find a good food wine.

Salice Salentino
Cannonau

Both types of reds can be rustic, affordable and quite good. I don't usually seek out specific producers, but if I lived in Europe with a better selection I might be able to explore some.

Can you go wrong with ANY Felsina bottle? I think not!
