Looking at my measly collection, I have just a handful of white wines in my passive cellar. I’d like to replenish but my past favorites have all shot past the $100 barrier - Ygrec, Heidsieck Blanc de Millenaires, TRB, etc.

Current standbys that are generally in my LWS are Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc, Ramey RRV.

What are your favorites that I should try or seek out?

Thanks!

Are you looking for drink now or white wines that will reward cellaring (and for how many years)?

Rieslings and sauternes??

I'm just getting into whites but that Chablis recommended by S1 is nice, I picked up a few from K&L recently. Also the Bien Nacido Chardonnay from La Pelle is incredible, you'd never guess its a Chard.

Roederer 242 champagne is a great deal.
the Vice Versa Platt Chardonnay is also killer and can sometimes be found for around $100 if you watch - Benchmark had it awhile back for I think a hair under $100.

The Eila Chardonnay I picked up at last years BerserkerDay was also very enjoyable!

If you like Ygrec then I would recommend Domaine de Chevalier blanc. You can age or drink young, so enjoyable either with age or not.

I saw Ch. Carbonnieux blanc in my local Costco today, always a good value for a DD, as is L'Arrivet Haut-Brion.

Leeuwin Estate is also under $100 for a chard. I have none at the moment because I drink them so quickly.

Agree with Skifree on Leeuwin Art Series. Also from WA, Xanadu and Lenton Brae
Scotchmans Hill in Victoria has a nice range of chardonnay

Most of Kumeu River’s range of chardonnay

The whole gamut of riesling (there’s at least one thread) with $100 buying nearly anything available other than exotics from trophy names

Tahbilk marsanne is a different experience

Thanks all! Keep ideas coming.

I forgot about Rieslings, especially Germans and JJ Prum which is one of my Top 10 producers and still under $100.

Yes, Tahbilk can cellar up to 25 years and is available in the US. Also available in the US and cellarable for 20 or so years are Tyrrells Vat 1 Semillon and Grosset Riesling (either Polish Hill or Springvale).

I see you are a fan of Ramey RRV. That is a great bottle around $35.

As S1 said, certainly the Chablis 1ers generally speaking

Back to Sonoma and other CA chardonnays that are excellent for well under 100, for a few more dollars (around $50-55 or so) look to Paul Hobbs RRV chardonnay. Maybe you can find the Kistler les N for around that price as well if you shop it.

I may be biased, but try some Central California whites.
A few recommendations are Chards from Sandhi, Arnot-Roberts, & Whitcraft.
I've found that Tercero's white wines frequently punch above their price point & the classic, Au Bon Climat, makes a some age-worthy whites.

Also +++ to everyone's Riesling reccs!

I almost never spend more than US$100 on wine, so this translates to favourite whites for me.

White Bordeaux seems to be much neglected in these forums, but I would look at Carbonnieux at the cheaper ($35-40) end. Chevalier and Malartic-Lagravière slightly more (but still well short of US$100).

Chateau Musar Blanc is a love it or hate it wine. Some vintages I love.

And some high end South African Chenin - we have particularly enjoyed the Ken Forrester Dirty Little Secret wines.

For fizz, I find much, much better value in the grower champagnes than in the big names. My house fizz at the moment is the Tristan Hyest Blanc de Blancs Les Terres Argileuses Extra Brut; also look at the J-M Seleque Solessence Nature Élevage Prolongé.

Good suggestions already, (+1 on Kumeu River lineup) and here's a couple more regions/varietals where recent vintages will hopefully offer both immediate and longer term enjoyment.

Loire Chenin: Damien Laureau, Domaine Guiberteau
Rias Baixas Albarino: Pazo de Senorans
Alsace Pinot Gris: Domaine Weinbach

I Concur with a lot of the already mentioned wines; German riesling, Loire and South African chenin.

I would add whites from Austria and Italy (Alto Adige and Campania/Taurasi) also recently I have found stunning value (not necessary cheap but within 100 dollar limit) in australian whites chardonnay and riesling.

There are so many awesome white wines under $100 that it seems an impossibly broad question. I’d suggest trying to find a cool local wine shop and just start drinking. Im sitting here with a glass of Julien Cruchandeau Bourgogne Aligote which is terrific for $35.

I think the white wines of Lopez de Heredia are worth pursuing. The Gran Reserva is the only one above $100. But, they are not easy to get unfortunately.

Agreed on Central coast (from Santa barbara/SY Valley up to the SLO/Arroyo Grande area just to the north), especially from a value standpoint.

Brewer clifton makes great chardonnay under $30, in addition to the ones you mentioned and many, many more. Fantastic cool climate area for chardonnay (and especially sta rita hills for the pinot)

I've had the LdH Gran Reserva blanc in the past - thinking the 1994 or 2000 -- and it's not my cup of tea. I just think they're too oxidized for my taste and smells like shellac or something you use to stain your wood floors. Same way with the reds - yup, the Gran Reserva Tondonia.

For bubbles, Laurent-Perrier Brut Millesime the 2012 can be had for under $70.

For under a C Note you can do very well in Champagne.

Chateau Suduiraut - easily found under $100, and under $60 for half bottles. 2001 & 2003 are drinking very well right now.

J.J. Prüm OR Max Ferd Richter - Kabinett and Spatlese from vintages like 2007, 2010 - 2013, and 2015. Both produce Graacher Himmelreich. Richter has several options that you can buy 3 for $100 (sometimes even 4!).

*Codger Complaint: Remember the days when you could get Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère under $100? We loved the '12 and '13.

Feel like I could have typed Dennis' answer for him.

Favorite of mine is Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre. <$40
Mid range look for Dupont-Fahn wines from burgundy and step up to Marc Morey white burgs.

And I will second Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. Smith Haut Lafitte makes a few amazing whites although one is > $100 (SHL Blanc) but try the Hauts de Smith Blanc and Le Petit Blanc. All excellent.

Yes, it's hard to narrow it down given the price point. There are so many great wines that fit the bill. The biggest problem is often availability: I love both Loire Chenin blanc (esp. Savennières) and Rhône whites, and there are great options available at this price point -- but finding them in shops can be difficult! For Savennières, Domaine aux Moines is a favourite. There are even good white Burgundies at this price point, but again actually finding them in shops is the challenge.

It might not be fashionable, but I always enjoy good white Bordeaux, and it can be surprisingly good value. Château de Respide blanc is a favourite. Last time I was in Bordeaux I bought a bottle of Château Latour-Martillac blanc on sale, which was also very good.

I've also been enjoying Pinot blanc (Weissburgunder-Pinot bianco) from Südtirol-Alto Adige recently. St Michael Eppan Schulthauser Weissburgunder is a particularly good example. Worth trying if you can find any examples locally.

For me this is the same question as favourite white wines given I doubt I have any over $100.

PJ Kühn Riesling Doosberg (they're all great though)
Domaine du Pelican Arbois Savagnin Ouillé
Various Condrieu, e.g. Andrei Perret Chery, Stephane Ogier Combe de Malleval.
Cantina Terlan Nova Domus or Vorberg.
Sherry! start a new thread for this though.
Just loads and loads of others.

Wish I could join you in that club. The Gran Reserva is an expensive bottle to blind buy. But on the strength of the Gravonia and Tondonia, I could be convinced to buy it one day.

Yes, I agree with you it has a very strange flavor profile. I remember first reading it had notes of petrol and was shocked this was desirable and/or even drinkable. But after having it, there is no doubt that note is present. It’s counterbalanced with all the other things going on in my book. I think it’s a wonderful, complex, and fantastic wine. A unique bottle that is a treat for those that like it.

Funny timing as well, I just purchased a half case of the latest release of Gravonia and Tondonia. Not much more seems to have made it to Chicago.
