I'm guessing that Joni went on around late afternoon!

Personally, I can take Joni any time of day and the enjoyment doesn't get lost even when mixed in with "Still a G Thing" by Snoop Doggy Lion (or whatever he's called nowadays) and "Why Can't I Be You" by Cure [;)]

Today, I'm definitely putting some Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down in there because I'm preparing for the rectal exam the IRS has promised to give me in a few weeks. Aren't they nice people? [:@]

Wife is a big K'Naan fan... very catchy stuff!

The hot Sunday afternoon mix from yesterday:

1) - Angelique Kidjo, Logozo (speaking of African rhythms)
2) - The Cure, Galore
3) - Joni Mitchell, Blue
4) - Death Row's Snoop Doggy Dogg, Greatest Hits
5) - Wes Montgomery, Smokin' at the Half Note (some of the coolest. jazz. ever.)

I *Love* this Wes album. he's my favorite jazz artist of all time.[:)]

Rare non-music day for me... After a week away, tons of tasks and calls. Tomorrow... Who knows? Oing to listen to new Linkin Park album tonight while I make dinner.

Surely I am not the only one who thought they should have played this at the closing ceremony of the Olympics?

Cheesy but brilliantly perfect.

fingers -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/15/2012 11:40:14 AM)

Working from home again today:

D1 - Morphine, "Like Swimming" - great band whose time was cut way too short
D2 - Jill Scott, "Experience, disc 2"
D3 - Bon Jovi, "Have a Nice Day" - cuz the wife's home and that's her fave
D4 - Erroll Garner Trio, "Concert By The Sea" recorded Sept 19, 1955 live in Carmel. Incredible jazz piano chops
D5 - "Tantra Lounge, vol 2" - Middle Eastern exotic electronica

dontime -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/15/2012 11:42:18 AM)

Same as most days - steaming Sirius' Underground Garage at work.

drycab -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/15/2012 2:27:23 PM)

I can't have music on in the background while I work. I get too involved in the music and I get nothing done! I have a TV on that I have no problem ignoring!

musedir -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/15/2012 2:52:50 PM)

In a serious Pearl Jam mood today but totally jazzed to learn the Met opera is broadcasting entire Ring cycle on PBS starting 9/11! Too ready and Dr. M already seeking serious party/bar/anything bodies to be out of the house! Wagner's not her cp of tea...[;)]

Semi-related...has anyone else wasted time lately playing with this? http://peopleslist.pitchfork.com/

I have, and for anyone who's interested, here's my list, although I keep shifting albums around, sometimes by many spaces, especially in the 10-40 range. I guess I have until midnight to mess with it more if I want to.

Recent listening:
Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
Beck - Mutations
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
Smog - A River Ain't Too Much To Love

wadcorp -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/17/2012 1:49:27 PM)

Phaseshifter – Red Kross
Big Night Music – Shriekback

Probably should not have sampled The Sword first thing this morning nursing a low grade head buzz...

I agree 100%

champagneinhand -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/18/2012 5:46:21 PM)

The last 24 hours was solid old school "Metal." Def Leppard was awesome, though the girls preferred Poison. They really put on a show where if it was their last, they go away knowing they gave all their best at their last concert. I really needs dream sleep.

Robert Pavlovich -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/19/2012 1:42:17 PM)

Can say I definitely have plenty of overlap on your list Bre, I've listened to more than my fair share of Spoon and Wilco over the last 10 - 15 years, doesn't get much better for the genre.

Also, listen to plenty of White Stripes (though De Stijl will probably always be a favorite), Radiohead, M Ward, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, and Beck. Never got in to Arcade Fire (but couldn't escape it), Sufjan Stevens, or Bright Eyes (favorite of my wife's). Does that National album "Boxer" have that song they used for "Win Win"? Remember liking that one.

-Anyway, why no Pavement?
-Robbers on High Street had a good run a while back (check out Tree City or Fine Lines if interested)
-Regrets & Brunettes: This was my band - blends indie with classic rock, and singer/songwriter styles.

These bands were favorites of a lot of the bands mentioned, great stuff:
-Big Star (#1 Record/ Radio City, Third Sister Lovers)
-Wire (Pink Flag, Chairs Missing)
-The Fall (This Nation's Saving Grace, or 50,000 People Can't Be Wrong)

Part of the conceit of the list was that it only goes back as far as Pitchfork does (1996), so I think they only had a couple of albums available for voting. Even so, Pavement is one of those bands I feel like I should like more than I actually do, but I've never been able to get into them...it's always struck me that I was at the wrong stage of life when I finally ran across them. (I feel similarly about Sonic Youth, Animal Collective, and several other indie-favorite bands I just don't quite "get.") I'm Wide Awake It's Morning is the only Bright Eyes album I really like (or maybe one of two), but I do think it has some great songs on it.

Definitely need to check Wire out more than I have.

Robert Pavlovich -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/19/2012 2:24:17 PM)

We agree on Animal Collective, big time. I've had a love/hate with Pitchfork over the years, but it's kind of the same with certain people and wine critics, just because Pitchfork or Parker give high marks doesn't mean you need to like the band/wine.

Can definitely understand what you're saying with the Pavement thing, there are plenty of songs I don't like as much now, being in my 30's, and for a lot of the bands I used to listen to, I remember when I'd go out to their shows how there were never many people older than say 28 or so.

Sonic Youth definitely took some effort, though if you do put in any time I'd definitely recommend "Daydream Nation", by far their best IMO. And if at any point you can't take Kim Gordon's singing, you can always just skip to the next Thurston Moore song.

J2K -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/19/2012 2:32:07 PM)

Rocked out to The Distillers this morning

fingers -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/19/2012 5:55:59 PM)

Keepin' it rather mainstream today

D1 - Best of Van Morrison
D2 - The Eagles, Hell Freezes Over
D3 - Earth, Wind, & Fire, All n' All
D4 - Barenaked Ladies, Gordon
D5 - a custom mix that I burned about 10 years ago: Goo Goo Dolls, Tool, Incubus, Cake, Bush, Alanis, etc

Kind of goes with the wines of the day, a Heidsieck Brut Reserve and a Tobin James French Camp Zin

musedir -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/19/2012 6:28:28 PM)

Added to the library today Van Morrison's Greatest Hits.

grafstrb -> RE: NWR: Today's Music Mix (8/20/2012 3:11:57 AM)

yesterday, during our Scrabble match, Ashley took out my selections from the changer and put in the following:

D1: Los Lonely Boys - "Los Lonely Boys"
D2: Soundgarden - "Down on the Upside"
D3: Beck - "Odelay"
D4: Human Waste Project - "e-lux"
D5: {empty}
