Since we are going to Portugal next year, we need to do some research. We attended a tasting at one of our favorite LWSs last night:
2x 2011 Casa Ferreirinha Douro Quinta da Leda
1x 2014 Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines
2x 2014 Quinta do Crasto Superior
1x 2015 Casa Ferreirinha Papa Figos

They usually show a map of the region on a TV screen but did not last night. I just happened to have a map from Wine Folly in the car so I went out to get it, I am such a geek. But the presenter seemed to appreciate it.

Dammit I sprung for the William and Mary I could not help myself, guess I will have to pass on Bedrock this offering. I am weak

William & Mary
Bedrock
D&R MSG

I’m weak in the other direction

BTW, bury that W&M in the cellar for 5 years.

11/16/2017 - I LIKE THIS WINE: (Edit)
Disclaimer: Will graciously offered me a bottle and asked for my impressions.

Opened on Tuesday evening and poured a glass. Coiled up tightly not unlike other ‘15s I have tasted with dense sappy fruit and oak dominating. Checked in again on Wednesday and it still needed air so I left the wine in the glass overnight and this note is from Thursday morning.

Dark red and purple fruit along with a whaft of tobacco leaves and cigar box. Nice intensity on the palate as the fruit and spice play off each other. The finish has a nice tart edge similar to the ‘14 that I really enjoy that balances out the fruit profile. The note of alcohol from FMIII was there on the pnp but after all the air it integrated nicely once the fruit settled down and the tannins appeared. Firm, fairly grippy tannins that soften a bit with some red berry notes lingering throughout the finish.

My recommendation would be to either A: Stash this in the back of the cellar for 5 years minimum or B: Pour into a decanter and let it breath for 24-36hrs or it will not show it’s stuff. This is seriously wound up tight right now but man does it deliver when you are patient.

Will do and thank for the note!

Max Kast from Broadbent was the presenter. Does your friend import any other Portuguese wines, this is all Broadbent brings in.

If you are visiting Piemonte you might check out Valpolicella which isn't that far when you go to Italy. It's just east of Lake Garda and a little west of Verona. It's very low key, not super touristy, great food and very reasonably priced. Soave is also in that area. If you eat in Fumane you will see many of the local winemakers there. Check it out.

We have not even started planning yet since it is so far off, but we will likely fly into Venice and stay in the Alto Adige area for a few days and then the Dolomites for hiking. If we are there a little longer, we will see what happens.

Thanks for the offer of assistance, I will let you know when we have more concrete plans.

My wife is the planner. We have already booked a trip to Portugal for 2018 (a week after we returned from the Azores) so Italy will be 2019, but it is not set in stone. Italy is the first place I have really wanted to return to.

Hahaha! We have enough of that, and Comte de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny as well. I really don't want to be opening a $200+ bottle every time she wants a Pinot.
