Status: offline 		My last wine was a Ruffino Chianti. Way overpaid for it at S$16 a glass (about US$12) too - enough to buy a whole bottle in the US!! I thought it was fair given the US retail price. Other tasters seemed to think it was utter plonk.

Status: offline 		By the way Colonel L, check out http://www.bordoverview.com/ for 2004 ratings. Absloutely the best Bordeaux rating resource on the net. Only problem is that it starts with the 2004 vintage which, however, is fine for your current purposes at least.

I have never been to a Costco in my life, do not have one in my area. The closest we have in Singapore is Carrefour, which has one or two gems every 6 months or so!

Status: offline 		Humbert Freres Bourgogne 2002. Great value for a Bourgogne Rouge, so you will see this again in the "best value" thread. My second bottle, and I enjoyed this far more than the last one for some reason or another.

Very interesting Languedoc wine.  Quite complex and very interesting.  The South of France has really picked up on the overall quality of their wines.

Veuve Clicquot it was alright. Unfortunately, I've never really been a fan. Different palates I guess. My last note on it, before last night, reads like this:

27/12/2007 rated 86 points: I have had countless glasses of decent but unexciting VC Brut NV over the years - this latest one served at a charity gala. I like the consistent nutty, yeasty notes, but it always seems to go a little imbalanced towards the end with the acid going a little too sour for my tastes. Competent, but not great. Don't get me wrong, I would happily accept a glass, even a bottle of this, but there are many other better champagnes and sparklers out there at the same price point. (4849 views)

Becks over Heineken.
Brakspears Ordinary Bitter over their Special.
One of my special Margaritas!
I must say that I infrequently buy Clicquot, it's a lot more expensive that Champagnes I prefer: this one was an offer at Dubai Duty Free.   As I've said before Tesco's Premier Cru @ <15 pounds takes some beating.  In fact a number of Own Brands frequently beat the Grand Marques when tasted blind.  If I remember rightly Waitrose have a good one too.

Prefer VC to Moet although neither get me excited.
Agree on the Becks over Heineken as well.
Have just opend a 2006 Two Hands Max's Garden.  Still can't get excited about this brand.  In the 3 years since I bought and tried a mixed case they have expanded the range and remind me a little of D'Arenberg in the width of range.  They seem to position themselves higher though but the wines just aren't there.  Samantha's Garden was good on day two so I might go back to the 03's soon and see if they're being made to keep!  They remind me a little of the Aussie Shiraz from the late 90's I was drinking a few years ago.

Status: offline 		Anyone tried the Ares before? I was tempted to get a bottle, but it is priced very highly. I like the Two Hands blokes' Burgundy negociant venture - Mischief and Mayhem - some of the labels are rather impressive. And that's a lot coming from a classic Burg lover.

On Champagne - I think there is quite a bit of good value in non-champagne sparklers, some of which I think give far greater value than the VC NV, I have been particular impressed with Taltarni's efforts from Tasmania, especially their blanc de blancs. [Of couse, if you can afford the Krug MV.. that's a different story altogether...]

Drank the last glass that was left in the magnum 24 hours previously - totally absent fizz, not one bubble.
Perhaps Paul's onto something.
Good test - 2 bottles of different champagne, leave a drop in each bottle and see whether VC has lost the plot (I mean Champers without bubbles is vin ordinaire).

Didn't go through with the Coppermine piece of my dÁrenberg try out (I thought too demeaning with Pizza, pepperoni, chilli's etc.).
Drank another bottle of Footbolt - probably between a  and  on the all new CL scale.

Got a good price on a mixed case of Two Hands from Farr.
They stock few Aussies (being a Bordeaux specialist) but I'm working on them.

Status: offline 		I will not ask you to open the Ares and give us a report unless you have more than enough bottles to spare! I hear that they need some time.

My latest note on the VC:

26/6/2008 rated 83 points: Jacques Cacheux Echezeaux vertical (1999 - 2005), The Universal @ Duxton Hill. Little starter to the dinner, this was just no good. I enjoyed the flavour profile on this bottle more than most VC NVs that I have had - typical yeastines, with apple and citrus fruits. Still has that sour end that I do not like, but rather more restrained this time, almost more balanced than usual. However, this was served too warm, probably kept too long in a warm place as well. Hardly any mousse to speak off - someone asked "where are the bubbles?" Maybe it was disgorged a long time back, with the bottle age improving the flavours somewhat, but certainly not so long that it became flat.
 
Would be interesting to do the test you suggested. Maybe when you guys have your CT meet-up.

I have tried a couple of bottles of their 2001 Grand Cru - Clos de Vougeot and Clos St Denis - both of which were very good, and some 2005 Beaune 1er Crus. I liked the Aux Cras, but try picking up the Champs Pimont - that was quite a bit better IMHO. However, "old" as 2002 may be, I think these are built for the longer run, and probably will do even better 5 years down the road.

Yes, 2002 is hardly old but who knows where that bottle's been since release!  Thank you for the advice on their Grand Crus.  I will seek them out.

What particularly impressed me here was the depth and complexity of fragrance.  Much as I love Pinot Noir from my home state of Oregon, those wines never seem to reach this level of earthiness.   And this was a Beaune!  2002 is clearly a vintage that I need to re-assess.

Status: offline 		2002 is one of the best Burg vintages in recent memory actually. While not quite as spectacular as 2005, I personally think it may even be better than 1999. I certainly find them cleaner in profile, and more classically Burg in some examples. I would suggest you either drink them now, or wait another 5 years or longer. From recent experience, quite a bit of the 2002s are just about falling asleep. The 1999s are certainly slumbering and most should not be touched for some time. Cheers to more Burg drinking!

I have one last bottle of Champy Grand Cru, a Clos de Beze 2001. I have tucked that away in the warehouse and will not touch it for quite a few years.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the advice on the 2002 vintage.  I have read the reviews and they are certainly laudatory.  For me, 2002 in Burgundy was released at a time when I was focusing on other regions, hence I didn't buy.  I have some 1999 and oodles of 2005 in the cellar but no 2002.  That is particularly unfortunate since 2002 is also quite good in Oregon and I thoroughly enjoy serving wines from both Pinot regions blind at dinner with guests.  Time to go get some 2002 Burgundy from good sources!
