So jumping straight in....

We're going to source another old D'Yquem since those are so fantastic and we need some good stickies to end a meal. Pretty much all I can guarantee at this point is it won't be the '89 again, but will keep you posted.

For the second wine thinking an SQN or a Grange. I think we might also source an older Chris Ringland, but given the pricing on those that might be a singleton and therefore not part of the formal tasting for us. Also very possible we'll be doing another round on Cali cabs since my money is on us ending up in Napa again at some point (although not right before).

I'll have to consult my Burg expert again before we declare there.

Putting a hold on the calendar.

As far as early declarations:

I'm game to bring another White Burg for Burg Thurs, will start looking for something suitable along the lines of the Montrachet from this year. Reserve the right to bring DRC if I find a good deal

Love Syrah and Steak. Definitely can bring SQN again, and could do Saxum and Lillian Blue Labels easily as well. Could always make that just a full up SQN lineup as well

A few suggestions for the afternoon sessions: First Growth Bordeaux, Premier CdP, German Riesling, and/or doing an adversarial style tasting...First Growth Bord vs CA Cult Cab, or any other other matchups that we could think of along those lines.

Wow ever the eager beaver huh S1?

So IMHO for the afternoons and evenings the double up 750s or mags with 6 wines per session is the way to go. The 13 wines from WA while tasty was a bit much for afternoon session.

+1 on the Syrah and steak deal. I think the side by side to have a bit more contrast in the tasting panel might be worthwhile for one afternoon session.

And we're talking a secondary market minimum price, not release price minimum, right?

So obviously, if you have something like a bottle of '92 Screagle that you bought for $50 on release, that is certainly welcome

It's not so much about the minimum value as it's about the wine, but some kind of threshold has to be set. At the end of the day, the top wines from top producers from top regions just aren't cheap.

And I think this is definitely a 'special wine' event, so bring some of those special bottles that you've been sitting on, for some TBD special occasions, that you can never actually decide on. Or source one of those 'dream' wines you've always wanted to try, but never had a real reason. This offline is a great reason and the perfect occasion.

I've replied and declared. 1996 DP. for sure. Possibly a pair of 1945 Maury, as I can seem to really enjoy the ports without some wood to keep them balanced. I also pairs have '06 Ornellaia and a few others that could come in to play. I will most likely only bring 2 pair of wines to the regular Friday-Saturday sessions, and something to BT of course.

Perhaps we can have smaller, or choices in the afternoon. That might take the burden of a pair or magnums off, with the exception of dinners. I would like to have the option of lighter styles of wine in the warm afternoons. Full throttle reds can have serious palate fatigue, which should come into play with the host of amazing dinner wines and foods.

I think some big reds for the afternoon is great; but some high end whites would be wonderful and help save our palates for the dinner event.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking when I threw out German Riesling for an afternoon session...Get a great lineup of old to young, lower alcohol, Rieslings for a warm Charleston day Can even make it all Gold Caps or something! Or maybe a lineup of CA and French Chard or just whites in general. Whatever it is, I think something lower in alcohol is in order before the Steak and Syrah dinner!

Of course, watch, it will be highs in the 50s or something next year....

There aren't too many whites that are above $100. So you guys are limiting yourselves to mostly white 'Burgs. There are some Loire and Bordeaux producers that carry the price tag. Okay, never mind ... forgot my point.

Rieslings can help solve the problem of "> X Dollars per bottle" but can be palate-fatiguing in their own right, IMO, especially when they are Legion. Intense wines, in their own right.

Totally agree on the whites, in theory and in principle. My wife and I drink more whites than reds, overall.

Anything will be palate fatiguing when presented in 80 degree temps with only one or two glasses to taste with. IF everything didn't start tasting the same I'd be really surprised.

I wish I could come (with a case of QC).

Alas, as long as this remains on the 3rd weekend of September, I won't get a chance. Unless the Cherokee County School Board eliminates fall break.

To the contrary, there are many white Rhones out there that should compete for your attention (courtesy of WS, with their scores, and release prices):

M. Chapoutier Ermitage White L'Ermite.... 2010...99 ...$560
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White L'Ermite... 2009...99...$560
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White L'Ermite... 2006...99...$210
Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage White...2010...99...$300

M. Chapoutier Ermitage White Le Méal... 2009...98...$220
Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage White...2009...98...$350
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White de l'Orée...2010...97...$220
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White de l'Orée...2009...97...$220
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White de l'Orée...2006...97...$205
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White Le Méal...2010...97...$220
M. Chapoutier Ermitage White Le Méal...2006...97...$245
E. Guigal Ermitage White Ex Voto...2009...97...$258
Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage White La Chapelle...2010...97...$336
Georges Vernay Condrieu Coteau de Vernon...2006...97...$125

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape White Vieilles Vignes...2010...96...$195
Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape White Vieilles Vignes...2006...96...$182

......this list could could continue for quite a distance. Note that the a number of the wines above might not be in their optimum drinking window now, but older vintages of those same wines should fill the role nicely. Don't ignore Rhones.

Just to throw a monkey wrench in your works... Cayuse and Saxum don't meet your #2 rule as release prices are sub $90 or right at $90...

Your welcome! . Haha.

Already looking like an amazing offline to come. And I know the secondary market prices far exceed the value.

quote:

ORIGINAL: S1

Well, we’ve completed another immensely successful get together. My students will tell you that after a successful event I will say, “Be happy but NEVER be satisfied!”

We do not want this to be perceived an elitist event, but it WILL BE an elite event.
Probably the same weekend as this year--3rd weekend in Sept.

Semel in anno licet insanire (Once a year everyone is allowed to go crazy)—Latin proverb
So we need to have a plan since many of us have to source wines for this event (and I have a relatively short shipping season here). We need to make sure that all holes are filled and that wines follow a logical progression. If you don’t have appropriate wines in your collection you must be willing to source. For the previous two events several attendees and I had to source extra wines to fill holes in the lineup. I would like to avoid that little financial hit next year. Rather than have themed tastings, I would like to plan interesting wines which can be arranged in fun flights for the afternoons, BUT, all wines must meet the "collectible" standard. Plan to spend a C-note—QPRs don’t belong (idea provided by a very wise and active forum member with lots of experience organizing offline events). I know that some people don’t like to discuss money but that gives us a really good starting point. I don’t drink 100+ dollar wines everyday but at this offline, where I spend a bazillion dude hours researching and planning, I must insist that the effort on the wines match the effort of the planning. If your personal buying ceiling is below 100, you either need to raise it or choose not to participate. Apply the same pricing regulations to any “extra” bottles you throw in the Wine Check at the last minute. .

FRIDAY-SUNDAY LOCATION, Kings Courtyard Inn, King Street, Historic District
http://www.kingscourtyardinn.com/
I will get Linn to work up a price for next year.

THE GROUND RULES
1. Each participant/couple must provide AT LEAST two identical bottles or a magnum of wine for one afternoon session and one dinner. No singletons allowed unless our numbers are below 20 participants. Feel free to post a singleton in this thread and see if someone will tag team another identical bottle a complete the pair.
2. The wines must be $100+ per 750ml bottle (including your add on bottles). Obviously a hundred buck magnum does not fit.
3. WE GOTTA HAVE SOME WHITES. We need them for dinners; we need them for 85 degrees in the Charleston September sun.

INTRODUCTORY SESSION--GRAND CRU BURGUNDY THURSDAY
Interest far exceeds capacity at Chez S1.
I will discuss the event with Chef Ben--he's a Burg slut like I am.
http://www.reddrumrestaurant.com
For this event, a hundred bucks per bottle really does even begin to meet the standard (look at this year’s lineup and start sourcing). Please note that great GC Burgundy needs age and lots of it.
For Burg newbies, read Clive Coates and look at the three-star producers.

SESSION ONE—AFTERNOON TASTING AT THE INN
Declare and I will organize the wines

SESSION TWO--STEAKS AND SYRAH)—http://hallschophouse.com/
Choose for this list, or add something better!
Alban “Reva” or “Lorraine” I can contribute a singleton of 2005 Lorraine or 2006 Reva if someone wants to tag team.
Bionic Frog (with some age)
Colgin Syrah IX
Grange
Lillian “Blue Label” (2007 x 2--mindmuse)
Reynvaan “Stonessence”
Saxum “Bone Rock” S2 and I are planning to tag team.
Sine Qua Non
TOP Côte Rôtie (these will far exceed 100 bucks for sure)
TOP Hermitage(ditto)

SESSION THREE—AFTERNOON TASTING AT THE INN
Declare and I will organize the wines

SESSION FOUR—CIRCA 1886 DINNER
Declare and I will organize the wines

Sold out unless people drop out.
