This morning about an hour before sunrise there were two great horned owls in our front yard, just hooting up a storm. In traditional Appalachian and Cherokee folklore, this portends a death in the family. My wife and I are both in good health, but I do have some elderly relatives. If anything follows from this I'll post up about it.

I'm on "Christmas Break".... meaning, I took my 2 days off as today and tomorrow because we're closed on Christmas. One of the small perks of being one of the guys who makes the schedule.

I haven't checked in for awhile. Done shipping the summer and fall orders, so just enjoying for a bit. Cold mornings here in Napa Valley - plenty of frosty mornings. Just making cookies, enjoying my daughter who is home for Christmas, and planning Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals and wines.

I got yelled at by HRH for having bought wine and sending it to my mother's house under the haven't you bought enough already mantra. (Package for over 21 signature arrived there). I mean I could have bought some wine and had it shipped there as she did drink through the Rasa special bottling already. However, in this case it had nothing to do with my need to be on the moratorium thread rather one of her cousins sent a gift basket with wine. Ha! see I am not the only source of acquisitions in the family.

Anyone else get the evil eye for a wine purchase you did not make?

Good luck with the family dad300 - scary because there is not much you can do.

Came home after work to find out that someone in the neighborhood.....borrowed some of my rose cones which i have rigged to cover my vinifera vines. Annoying to say the least. Those rose cones work however...my Gewurztraminer survived -29F a few years ago.

I donated blood while at work, so not much wine for me tonight. A 2013 Stefania Santa Clara Cabernet that i opened yesterday...it's willing & able.

Hey, folks....does anyone here know anything about this wine? It's a Pinot Crni (Pinot Noir) from Croatia. Vino-non-cognoscenti relatives bought it for us on their recent trip to the Adriatic.

What I most want to discover, is how to open the bottle. The front "label" and the "capsule" appear to be made of epoxy (!!?!!), with a faux-bronze finish. The capsule is very, very solidly cemented to the bottle, and at present, I cannot imagine how I will get into the bottle, without having to break said bottle. It's almost as if the bottle might have been intended to be sealed permanently, which might be a hint as to the nature of its contents........

The alcohol content of 11%, and the 500-ml size, suggest that it might be a dessert wine.

I guess if anyone can answer this it will be Forceberry.

But the label doesn't specify it as sweet (and I can't immediately think of any sweet wines made from pinot noir). I'm old enough to remember when 11% would be the normal strength of a Burgundy - maybe Croatia hasn't yet caught on the the Parkerisation of wines into big hot red fruit bombs?

Man, that's going way back. I've been on this board since 2013 and I don't remember him.

so having searched around..
kvalietno is in the middle of the Croation Quality levels.. sorto of like qualitswein not premium vino but..not table wine either
Plešivica is the region and i believe okic may be the vineyard.
Plešivica is is considered the champagne region of Croatia and mainly grows chardonnay and Pinot Noir..

so it looks like you have a mid level pinot from a known pinot region.. thats a good start,

as far as the capsule.. nice sharp blade and slow and steady as you shave the top to see what the cork or enclosure is..

Well, I got the capsule off....but it required the most work ever.....I needed two multi-tools and about 15 minutes of intensive labor. I basically had to chisel it off. The material appears to be a mixture of red clay and glue.

This better be some damn good pinot.....

Well, it's not flawed, but not exactly "damn good" either. Tastes like a 1970s Burgundy from a weak vintage; the grapes appear to have achieved phenolic ripeness, as the tannins are not green, but there isn't much packed into the wine. It seems diluted.

Edit: it improves a bit with air. Tastes like a Chorey-les-Beaune from a cool vintage.

Monday, Monday... I’ve been slack. Slept in for an eternity (7:28am) this morning after the doxies had gone out around 5-ish. A cold wet nose told me that it was time for breakfast. Fair enough.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I certainly saw that some of us ate very well and drank nicely too. Bravo!

Taking the tree and decorations down today... always a bit sad but ready for a better 2021!

As I walked to the kitchen this morning this was my moment of Zen that I am sharing with you... Sláinte!

Hump Day for those who care - otherwise it's Wednesday the penultimate day of 2020.

Doing a full inventory of the cellar today. Used the export function to download a list of individual bottles to a spreadsheet. Will then compare cellar to said spreadsheet. Should be easier and more accurate than my previous attempts.

See my post later in the "I Suck At CT" thread.

I was doing spreadsheets when Michael was still in diapers. Heck, I taught VisiCalc to the partners at Arthur Andersen in my early days...

This one's for Don.... broke out the Van Halen albums today, plugged in the Bang & Olufsen Beogram RX2, and cranked it up.

Today is our wedding anniversary as well. 37 years. 42 if you include our 5 year engagement (had to finish college first). Wine has not been picked yet. Going to the butcher about 10 AM to pick out the protein. Wine will be matched accordingly.
