I’m tapping my bottle of Jefferson’s Chateau Suduirant Sauternes Cask Finish tonight. Which I guess makes this post sorta wine related.

I did a little splurge and stocked up for what I hope will be a LONG time:

Bib & Tucker Small Batch 6 year old
Booker's 2018-01 Kathleen's Batch
Larceny Very Special Small Batch
Noah's Mill
Willett Pot Still Reserve

That Willett bottle is pretty wicked: it's shaped like a pot still. Fancy bottles often worry me with wine. Why the fancy package? Need to hide inferior product? I did some research, though, and the Willett appears to be good stuff, crazy bottle notwithstanding. It's a stark contrast to that Willett bottle which is basically a flat-bottom wine bottle.

I recently finished off a bottle of this. It is indeed good stuff. The bottle is cool, but kind of irritating, insofar as it takes up more than its fare share of space in the cabinet!

The "flat-bottom wine bottle" versions are the Family Estate Bottled whiskeys (both Bourbon and Rye) and are actually produced at the Willett Distillery which restarted operation in 2012. That's why they are so young (the latest release being only 4 years old). The only other Willett that is actually made at the distillery is the resurrected "Old Bardstown" label but that is KY only. The fancy bottle you guys have referred to, the Willett Pot Still Reserve, has been and remains to this day sourced whiskey from other distilleries in KY...at least for now. Not a bad thing...just thought I would share some nerdy info.

Good nerdy info, thesternowl, thanks for posting. Isn't, "nerdy info" the reason many of us are on these CT Boards anyway?

It would be interesting to pull together an infographic around what is sourced from where. I suspect that there would be a lot of lines getting drawn all over the place.

Maybe there should be a list of maybe our top 3 favorite Bourbons in each price category determined by whomever. So maybe:

1. Sub $50
2. $50-$75
3. $75-$100
4. Over $100

It would be interesting because at a certain price I would be inclined to buy Scotch over Bourbon but others might be different. I’ve never paid over $50 for Bourbon but might be inclined if it was insanely good. I don’t think we’ve come up with The Difinitive List but maybe it’s too subjective. Seems like Eddie should go first since he lives in Kentucky.

I'll play a little, but this is based on my relatively small experience:

1. Sub $50: Angel's Envy, Four Roses Small Batch
2. $50-$75: E.H. Taylor Small Batch or Blanton's
3. $75-$100: never had one
4. Over $100: never had one
5. Sub $30: Buffalo Trace

My experience with Bourbon isn’t that vast which is why I’m interested in all of your responses. Mine are:

1. Sub $50- Elijah Craig Small Batch, Makers 46, Four Roses Small Batch
2. $50-$75- Woodword Reserve Double Oak
3. $75-$100- Never had one
4. Over $100- Never had one

I actually don't drink much Bourbon, but that's mostly an artifact of demand grossly outstripping supply here, for the most desirable stuff (Buffalo Trace could sell its entire production of the most fashionable high-end Bourbons in Kentucky, and still not meet local demand.....) And my favorite one isn't even available (except, very rarely, in the secondary market) in the United States. It's Blanton's Gold, which is distributed in Britain, the Caribbean, and Japan (the entire production having been bought by a shrewd Japanese company). If you can find it, buy a bunch of bottles.

Other than that, I like the various Pappy Van Winkle bottlings, and George T. Stagg...but very rarely get to try them.

From my limited experience, I'd pronounce the Japanese stuff excellent. Try what you can find. Rick, you would have more luck sourcing them than I would. Anything worthy that appears on a shelf here disappears in about 3 seconds.

Edit: Woodford Reserve Double Oak is an easy find here, but I don't like it nearly as much as almost anything from Buffalo Trace. Honestly, Buffalo Trace is head-and-shoulders above anyone else.

Woodford has the best distillery tour if you're looking for charm and great Bluegrass Country photos. If you're a whiskey geek, and get into the nitty-gritty of fermenting and distilling, Buffalo Trace has the best tours. Touring Buffalo Trace is like touring an aging steel mill in Pittsburgh or Baltimore. It's a large, old industrial facility. But they make the best Bourbon. Insist on Freddy Johnson as your tour guide if you visit.

Sup Eric! I feel like this could really be a challenge. The link to the family tree that was provided above is somewhat helpful but there are so many other brands out there and many of them contract distill in one place and bottle in another. One of my favorite bourbons is currently distilled in Kentucky but bottled in California. How that all works out in the end is weird and seems somewhat spurious but I've come to accept that these types of things have been happening in American whiskey since prohibition.

Ray Walkler, lately of Maison Ilan, claims now to have his own Kentucky Bourbon brand, with "French refinement"; delivery is allegedly to start in December. We've been keeping track of this over at WineBerserkers (the Maison Ilan thread). Looks like it may be another scam.

Thanks

Yo! Yes, I suspect that a full "family tree" would be pretty incestuous across the industry, but I wonder how much of it is covered by non-disclosure agreements and other contractual terms to obfuscate the lack of linearity in sourcing, such that you'd never be able to fully draw it out.

So, what's the name of this "one of my favorite bourbons"?

Ah! Yes, I've been enjoying the Wathen's and Medley's Private Stock 10yr I picked up on your recommendation. Didn't realize--and it would never have occurred to me to look into--that they're bottled in CA.

Found a couple of nice Bourbons to try:

Blanton's Original
Belle Meade Sour Mash Whisky Bourbon

Have no experience with either but my buddy said the Belle Meade is really good too. I just took his word for it.

Angel's Envy is the house Bourbon. They were the first port barrel finished - now there are many.
I like wheated Bourbons so most anything from Buffalo Trace is fine.
I have been searching for years for a bottle of W.L. Weller 12 year, but cannot find it anywhere.
I waited in line in the January cold to buy a bottle of Pappy 12 year. It is the only Bourbon I paid over $100 for.

Having a glass of Blanton’s Original now and it is excellent and easily the best bourbon I’ve tasted. So much flavor. I can get used to this. Now I’m on board to trying some more names.

So I saw a bottle of Blantons Gold while I was on Grand Cayman. Problem was that I had already purchased a liter of Johnny Walker Double Black and a liter of Flor De Cana 18 Year Old Rum. It was also $87 CI which is $104 US so I passed.
