Well this is English-language Scrabble, although at the highest level Scrabble is more about probabilities, strategies and learning lists; knowing what a word means helps only a little, and I regularly play words that I couldn't even vaguely define. Some of the best Scrabble players in the world have spoken English which could, politely, be described as basic (I'm thinking of the Thai ones in particular).

The best Scrabble player in the world for the last decade or so has been a Kiwi called Nigel Richards. A few years ago he got a bit bored with winning everything in English, so one year he set himself the task of learning to play French Scrabble for the next annual championship (which comes with a different mix of letters making up the 100 tiles, and different points for some letters). A year later he duly won the French language Scrabble World Championship. He can't hold any sort of conversation in French. As you might imagine the French were rather nonplussed at this.

Congratulations, Paul! And good luck in the competition. May you have reason to open another bubbly at its conclusion.

Well you only have 7 tiles on your rack, so you'd need two of the letters to be already in place on the board. If those were in exactly the right spots you could get 248 points for playing the remaining 7 tiles.

Sorry - way off topic!

This evening, my first sparkling rosé from Etna. An interesting one to try, but it won't be replacing champagne for me, even at only ~US$23.
