Thanks. I am not afraid to admit ignorance.

Any thoughts on French second wines and French frugal-type wines always appreciated. I don't have enough experience to wisely select from juice >$20, nor is French juice consistent w/my cellar strategy. But daily and weekend drinkers are not in the strategic category. Most French wines I find are in areas like Languedoc, Roussillon, Provence.

Cheers!

Try the Loire Valley for red and white. I hear the Jura wines are nice.

+1 on Jura,

Costco has a Guigal Cotes du Rhone (red) and a white from Delas which are both solid. Also a Brocard Chablis at around $16. They also have halves of Carmes de Rieussec at about $10 (second wine of Rieussec) as an intro to Sauternes big names

Generally Languedoc amnd Roussillon are better value than other regions, and you might find a picpoul ( lightish white) as you look around

Unless you like a particular house style, the second wines are going to have a bit of a price uplift because of the grand vin name as compared with a petit chateau. That said, Marquis de las Cases, second of Leoville L C is frequently outstanding

Recently had the Brocard Chablis 2012. Very good. Bought 2 of the 2014s. One for us and one for my SIL. Glad I did so.

Will check out local Costco soon and add these ideas to my list...

Extend your budget $5 and get some Joseph Drouhin Cotê de Beaune Villages. Totally worth it.

Yes. Has become my new go-to when a restaurant or bar is savvy enough to have it and I'm ordering a glass of something. One of the areas where there's still some good value to be had.

Rhys (hadn't realized until now that they moved into first spot with the most recent order)
Arcadian
Rochioli
Schrader
JJ Prum
Boislauzon
Cayuse
Myrat
Dirty & Rowdy
Carl Loewen

The Myrat and Loewen are both on that list strictly by virtue of case+ purchases of one particular wine; all others are listed pursuant to a selection of different bottlings.

I went with top 12. Is it wrong to be head over heel in love with the composition of one's own wine cellar? The Col Solare makes me think "okay fine, whatever." But the rest of it makes harps sing a good-drinkin,' graceful-agin,' still-gettin' ahead on the mortgage song deep in my chest :)

Domaine Huet
Renato Ratti
Ridge
Château Guiraud
Col Solare
Casanova di Neri
Louis Jadot
Antinori
Alvear
Domaine du Pégaü
Pio Cesare
Orma

I could use a stack of BDX in there somewhere, maybe add some Chateau Smith Haut LaFite and push that label up to the top too.

I'm surprised by the bdx, given that I rarely drink those (but I guess that's why they stick around in large numbers).

Absolutely not! You should love your cellar!

Overall Top 10:
Colgin
Pride Mountain Vineyards
Progeny Winery
Château de Beaucastel
Sine Qua Non
Arkenstone
Château d'Yquem
Reynvaan
Constant
David Arthur

Very Napa heavy, but it's interesting to see the purchasing trend so far in 2017, which means the Top 10 will likely change soon-ish

Top 10 in 2017
Château Rayas
Carter Cellars
Hundred Acre Vineyard
Abreu
Progeny Winery
Château de Beaucastel
Lokoya
Bodegas Vega-Sicilia
Henri Bonneau
Sine Qua Non

Small, frugal cellar here. <150 bottles.

...and a similar cellar size here, if one with a different make-up. Listing just the producers for which I have 4+ bottles, since the list gets much longer when the cutoff is 3.

Croma Vera - helped along by a case purchase of rose for summertime...good wines, and run by friends
Domaine Felettig - Burg is generally out of my range, but I found these at a very good price, opened one, and then went back for more
Tercero - a mix of tasting room purchases & bottles from the recent Wine Exchange sale
Tolo Cellars - remnants from a producer we got to know years back...hits and misses here
CT Barrel Project - a few each of the 2012 & 2014 WA bottles
Field Stone - a few ageworthy bottles we're sitting on from when my MiL worked in the tasting room
Antonio Vallana e Figlio - quality QPR nebbiolo for drinking...um, someday
Terrassous - just reloaded on this inexpensive 6-year rivesaltes after liking the first bottle

It was only a few years ago that I reliably stayed <= 100.

Cognitive dissonance sigh....Frugal, yet so tempting.

It is wine, after all.
