I never understood how some folks could open a wine and not drink it all. I'm sure some would be fine for a day or two but we always finish what we open that day.

My wife doesn't always agree with my choice of wine, particularly if (a) it's a Port or domestic Cab, and/or (b) if it's a weeknight. She works some odd hours, so she doesn't always feel like a glass of wine at 7 AM when she's just getting home from her job. Also, I don't often have more than 1 or 2 glasses after work, and sometimes I don't drink any wine whatsoever. From this past Sunday night to last night (when I opened a 2002 Huet) I had no alcoholic beverage at all. As such, there are often 2 or 3 open bottles in our fridge, being consumed over the course of 3 to 6 nights.

Hey Guys - Some really interesting trends here. Surprised how much Ridge and Rhy's shows up! Here is my list:

Ridge has two thing going for it that make it hit a lot of top tens. Massive wine club subscription, many more casual wine-lovers who started with Ridge then got more serious but never went away from Ridge. A few of my family members in California have been in Ridge wine clubs since the early 80's for instance, and aren't generally wine geeks or cellar-horders. Their cellars (aka basement corners) consist of a case of random bottles and plenty of Ridge.

And Ridge is so damn reliable in producing wines at fair prices that cellar just fine. There next to zero likelihood that an aged bottle of Ridge is going to suck. If I'm in Total Wine or some similar store with $150 burning a hole in my pocket but no real sense of what I want/need, there's a good chance I walk out with 3-6 bottles on Ridge. Because I know that I'll never look at the stack of Ridge in my cellar and think "gawd what was I thinking?" Rather I'll be like - "oh look, I have 4 bottles of 12 year old Geyserville/Santa Cruz Estate/East Bench/etc, lucky me, time for some good drinkin'."

So yeah, Ridge, always a good/easy/just-shows-up choice.

I've also noticed Ridge in may lists.
...and me without a single bottle.

I get the offers in email, but I tend to pass them by because it's just another Cali wine.
Guess I really ought to wade in a bit - but with so many choices it's hard to know ehere to start.

A friend turned me on to Eagles Trace a few years back and I was able to accumulate a nice collection through WTSO over time at reasonable prices. Great QPR.

Read recently that many wines last longer than we think they will. My usual practice is to have only one open at a time, although I'd like to have more than one sometimes.

What has been your experience with reds vs. whites vs. sparklers? Inquiring minds....have a VacuVin and a sparkling wine stopper. If it is screwcap we often just use that after opening.

cranburgundy? anyone?

Sparkling wine isn't something I can speak about, but for still wine (whether red or white) I've found that the sweeter it is, the longer it can remain decent tasting in the fridge. I've never found the need for any fancy products to reseal a bottle - just the cork, or if that crumbles / breaks, a capabunga, is sufficient.

I'm just curious how you manage and stay on top of a cellar this size? How many bottles do you usually go through in a week?

The reason I ask is that with 300 bottles I feel like I can totally stay on top of a cellar this size so that I can drink them in their optimal windows. I just feel that once you get so many bottles it's harder to manage? It also depends on how big your family is. Usually it's just my wife and I and our two kids during holidays. We don't have any large parties either so that's a way of minimizing bottle consumption.

Your cellar looks quite impressive and I was just curious.

We generally drink 250 to 300 bottles a year, and so far are doing a pretty good job staying up with the drinking window.

We do enough family/friend group things that getting rid of wine at the end of the window is not a problem...

Ha! thanks. I suppose there are very few (if any?!) producers like it. It is my only Lebanese wine, so it is disproportionately represented.

Nothing wrong there, it is the #1 producer in my cellar as well! ;) And no, I don't have any other Lebanese producers in my cellar either.

And I agree with you that there really are so very few producers like it!

I found out I have a much more diverse cellar than I thought:
- Vincent Arroyo: 18.3%
- Reynvaan: 3.6%
- Pierre Gaillard: 1.8%
- Anaba: 1.3%
- Domaine Guion: 1.1%

And hundreds of producers that comprise less than 1% of my cellar. Other than the Vincent Arroyo I'm surprised there isn't any other winery with a significant position.

Reviving this thread for any updates. I have one - Jean Edwards Cellars is currently the top domestic holding for me, moving past Arrowood. In a couple days when I order their new releases, they'll move into second place among all holdings, past Huet, and behind only JJ Prüm. Kind of a no brainer as I'm keeping multiple verticals running and their wines are delicious.

I just looked and Cayuse has replaced Quilceda Creek as the top holding in my cellar. While my Washington wines are grouped among a very few producers (Cayuse, QC, Betz, No Girls, Soos Creek, Cadence), my Bordeaux is spread out among many more chateau's. So even though I have more Bordeaux than Washington wine in the cellar, the top producers are from Washington.

I keep buying Napa reds. Just a few here and there, but gradually this is eating into the ratios. But my favorite wines remain the top Rhône blends, especially Rayas, Marcoux VV, Charvin, Pegau. I just can’t reist that sweet front edge and the smoothness behind it... haven’t been buying more Rhône wines lately but I have deep, deep reserves. And the white wines are amazing too.
