Thank you Chris for the Compendium. It turns out that there have been Eur/UK SS's in eight of the last thirteen years, the most recent in 2018: the market is there!

This post is to gauge interest for setting one up.

Cheers,
Sean

Hi,
That's a good idea. I'd always ignored the secret santa threads as I assumed they were always US only. I am in northern Italy and am potentially interested in participating -- though I'll be away for a bit over Christmas so would have to send/receive my wines prior to that. I am a PhD student so I would maybe have to keep to a more limited budget than some other participants. Not sure if either issue is critical or not.
Thanks,
penguinoid,

Thanks for the reply. Let's see in the next week or so whether there is more interest. It seems in the past there would be 5-10 participants. Five does seem a sort of minimum to me.

Thanks. Yes, will wait and see how much interest there is. Fingers crossed!

I'll play along, this has always been fun in the past.
Budget is not an issue as far as I'm concerned; I'd rather have a 20€ Wow! than a 50€ Meh....

Yes, good point -- me too!

EDIT - I only just read the US Secret Santa thread, so now I can see where the sum of €50 is from. They say "the value of the wine should be at least $50.00, before taxes and before any shipping costs", which wouldn't work in Europe. I'm not even sure of the rate of sales taxes on wine in Italy -- presumably there's VAT + an alcohol tax -- so I would have no idea how much to spend .

Great -- up to three! Hopefully we can get at least a couple more.

I would just use the "value" on CT or, if missing, whatever I'd paid for it (incl. VAT, of course).

I'm happy to play under any reasonable price limit. I sent a Christmas case of wine to my son last year, and the lowest priced bottle was €8 (Tio Pepe)!

That seems good. I can kind of understand why they put that rule for the US (I think sales taxes vary a lot by state?), but hard to calculate here. Either €30 or €40 would be possible limits. I'll probably try and buy a local (Südtirol) wine, and could get some very good bottles at that price.

That will work. We were just in Innsbruck last week visiting my wife's family -- always Südtirol there. I get cases of wine from my father-in-law Christmas and Birthdays. There's always some Gottardi Blauburgunder Mazzon, which I love.

Ok, great. I am still learning about Südtirol wines, so have not yet tried this Blauburgunder. I've not had much luck with local Blauburgunders in general, so I am keen to try a good example -- I will look out for it. A colleague suggested that the villages of Mazon, Glen, and Pinzon were good for Pinot noir, so that's another avenue to explore.

I have been a happy SS partecipant in all, I guess, the European editions so far, so if there is the interest and will to do it this year too count me in.

I hope there will be some more enthusiasm as in 2016 we were only 5...

Regarding the value of the wine I think the last time, 2016, we opted for a minimum of 40 Euros of value, VAT included, as VAT it is pretty much comparable in all Europe.

Our great Elf at the time, JgerbasIII, wisely wrote: Budget should be approx. 40 euros. (Gents, this is very loose going up, NOT down. Just because some winery normally offers a bottle for 40 euros... and you buy it for 30 does NOT qualify.) These should be special or regional bottles..
most all of us get deals... just be fair. Remember, once you put it in to your cellar, the average price will be shown.. lol

Going on what I know about shipping anything out of the UK these days, I wouldn’t count on any participation from there

Regular grocery parcels take two weeks to get to Germany and as for wine…my favourite retailer has pretty well given up on finding a shipper at all

I was wondering about that; so it's still a mess....

The thread made it to the second page, aka 'page of death.'

Oh, well. I'll try again next year.
