Neighbor friend and I exchanged a couple of 6 packs of dark beers. Tonight, it’s the Rasputin Imperial Stout.

Pilsner Urquell. [I think it is probably a better example of its type than Stella Artois, but I prefer the type of the latter.]

Started the playoff games with a couple Toppling Goliath Pseudosues. Finishing the evening with a Bell's Two-Hearted Ale. Both are what I consider classics.

Roel, you sound like a wise man. However, I think LeFort is even better. I should visit the Vander Ghinste brewery sometime.

Went to Maine beer company yesterday..
Picked up some stouts and porters to take home to Tn.
Picked up Black Barn 28 an imperial stout released last friday the 14th. Mean Old Tom,a stout and Black Barn 18? A baltic porter..
Both black barns are apparently only available at the Brewery.

Wise only after a glass or two , and my wife would disagree.
I will put Vander Ghinste on my list, thanks for the heads-up. And I'll get hold of some Le Fort

BTW I see you're from Hoensbroek. I grew up not far from there in Geleen. Many visits to Kasteel Hoensbroek on school outings :-)

Cheers

Davidh and ROEL, I will have to look for Lefort next time I visit the beer distributor, and also when my wife and I dine in the Belgium restaurant within our village.

Thanks.

I am on my 2nd beer of the evening, a beautiful Sapporo. The first one was a Tuborg from Danishland. Japanese beer and me are GREAT friends, love them more than any other beer I have tried. Asahi and Sapporo are pure bliss.

Finished off a long Friday by heading over to the patio at the brewery across the street with some friends from work...had a Liquid Gravity Goffbrau (Hefeweizen). It's not a style of beer I normally go for, but this was nice.

Just tried the Westmalle Tripel at that Belgium restaurant last night. A very nice beer; nice enough for me that I went to the beer distributor today to get more. I had it with a bistro burger while my wife was eating mussels.

That's what I love about this forum, plenty of recommendations!

Glad to hear you liked it!
Another one of my favourites is Corsendonk Agnus. More difficult to find on your side of the pond I think, but if you do come across a bottle, I think you'll like that one too..

I'll tell you about the beer I *wish* I was drinking, but can't because our trip to Belgium had to cancel due to Omicron.

My wife's cousin is now brewing beer in Belgium, and getting ready to also start making white wines (very promising terroir near Chimay, on soil layered over the same chalky substrate you find in Champagne, to the south). His beers are under a label called La Riezoise, and he dropped off samples for Christmas at my brother in law's house. Apparently all were rapidly liquidated. Stef reports that they were outstanding and that he especially liked the amber ale.

So, I'm basically crushed by this. Just hanging in there until July when we get our next window to go try them! What I really want to do is go visit that area -- Belgium has a lot of really nice little corners and Rièzes seems to be quite nice; they are doing a guest house, teaming with the local restaurants and patisserie, and with the beer and wine, it could be the next gourmet destination. Certainly, it will be for me.

If anyone is in the area, check the beer out and post some TNs...

Great! That gives me another reason to stop at Finger Lakes, along with Ravines and Anthony Road wineries, next time I'm driving through. I may have to take the circuitous route.

Though it is IMO a bit less good technically than Pilsner Urquell, I slightly prefer the taste of Stella Artois, In the past I have enjoyed Carlsberg and Tuborg.

In a pub I might order something different, for example Sam Adams or an IPA.

Had a Paix Deux Triple last night. If you're a fan of triple this is one to look out for, not your ordinary triple.

Davidh, I'm fairly new to Tripel beers so what would you consider the taste of an ordinary Tripel? I will look out for the Paix Deux.

I live in The Netherlands 10 min drive from the Belgian border, so not sure how easy it is to source Paix Deux in the US.

A Tripel has a very intense flavour, high alcohol (about 7 to 10%), full body. It has some sweetness and fruits like peach/apricot or banana and spices (cloves is one that I get a lot). Not a lot of hop and therefore limited bitterness. If you were to compare them I would say a heavy blond beer (high alc) would be a decent indication of how they taste.

You Guys are driving me crazy. My wife and I, and 10 other friends, did a " Beercycling " tour through Belgium a few years ago. We did about 25 flat miles along the canals each day and stopped at 2-3 microbrews along the way. Best road trip ever. All was included: beers, bikes, breakfasts, hotels, most meals, van to move the luggage, etc. Loved Belgium. The beers were killer good !!! Don't find too many of those here in Seattle. But then again, we have our own killer beers... Cheers, Ed
