2020 The Walls Vineyards Wonderful Nightmare

Walla Walla Valley Tempranillo more

Smoke bomb.

Hopefully, it was just this specific barrel/bottle that felt the effects of smoke-taint. Completely unpalatable. Proceed with caution and drink what you have now.

We run to lower publicized wines from great winemakers. Sorry we did on this wine, as it was horrible. Nose: Dark fruits, woody, leather, a sense of a richer big flavor. Taste: Smoky and Merlot like. We decanted this for 2 hours, and kept acting like it wasn’t decanted. Once we realized we had done the right thing by decanting, here were our thoughts. Bitter, impossible to find fruit. A disgusting tannin bomb, that should not be drank yet. Tastes like a shitty blend that you might get at a low end steak house. Does NOT inspire me to buy the many $135 offerings Rasa offers. Avoid this garbage, as they should have put this down the drain. I might be interested in trying their $135 offerings. But NEVER this garbage in a bottle again.

Drinking well now. Means I go the fruit a bit, but still plenty of savory flavors to balance. Outstanding value at the current case offer ($20/bottle) from the winery. Should cellar for at least another five years, and maybe up to fifteen.

  • Comment posted by Jake112380:

3/26/2024 9:43:00 PM - Clearly I had an autocorrect error here. I’m looking at “Means I go the fruit a bit,” and I have very little idea what I was thinking. It could be “Leans into the fruit a bit,” which is true, but it could be something else that is lost to time.

Going downhill. Some nice herbal and tobacco notes but too sweet and flabby. Not enough acidity to cellar.

Look, this wine is good. Maybe almost great. It’s got lots of oak influence, solid black fruit flavors , and lots of length. Am I happy I bought it? Yes. Would I trade a bottle of this for the 2019? Also yes.

  • Comment posted by Jake112380:

8/6/2023 3:24:00 PM - If I recall correctly, the 2019 was a Bordeaux (or maybe Bordeaux plus something like a little Syrah or Tempranillo), and the 2020 is Syrah-Cab. They’re both good, but definitely distinct, and for me that 2019 has a great flavor profile. Probably a matter of personal preference, though.

Another 10yo Abeja that was past its prime or flawed. This flaw isn't fatal, but the fruit is faded and stewed. Drink asap.

  • Comment posted by Jake112380:

2/20/2020 10:47:00 PM - That’s weird. I had this at barrel tasting December 2019 at Abeja and it was excellent—like excellent to the point that I felt compelled to fork out some serious $$$ for it. I’m going to pray to Dionysus et al that your experience was an aberration.

Tasting event sample.
Stewed cherry and black fruit on entry, round acidity. Wood and vanilla show in the mid and it's just sweet fruit through the finish. I was looking at the talent sheet and the price for this seems wrong. Then I looked at previous years which describe elegant and balanced fruit with restrained acidity at a $16-18 price point. This has no restraint and is $40. Did someone cook the goose? What's up with this year? Also the following years price went up as well, so maybe this is an unfortunate trend.

  • Comment posted by Jake112380:

10/27/2022 6:28:00 PM - The pricing on this wine has pretty consistently been mid to upper 30s, increasing slightly over time. I think the lower prices you’re seeing on here are reflective of discounters like Garagiste and Full Pull (I don’t know which ones they use, but I believe they do occasionally sell through those outlets).

Still good, but this bottle is a bit disjointed. A little less fruit, a little more tannin, a little less balanced. 89-90, rounding up based on my prior note. Considering the other notes, maybe some bottle variation?

Sideways dude has it wrong. This is a good wine. It’s legit.

Blackberry compote and vanilla aromas. Flavor is big, juicy marionberry initially, followed by a bit of acid, oak, tobacco. Big-ish tannins. Long finish that features starts with black fruit and fades slowly.

  • Comment posted by Jake112380:

10/27/2020 9:34:00 PM - It’s good now. It might improve a bit over the next year or so, and it should keep for 3-5 more years. No reason to wait in my opinion.

Note to self: Don't buy any more Wind Gap. Don''t look at the fabulous price. Don't look at the lofty critic scores. Just don't do it.

I get that some people like these, I am not one of them. There are too many other really enjoyable wines out there to fall into this again. One bottle left: bring it to a party, and make it someone else's problem.

The nose is a bit harsh with some trace of violets. Nice dark fruit, black cherries, pepper. It is starting to become unbalanced. The acidity is somewhat harsh and not in balance with the fruit and sweet tannins. Finishes long, but again a bit too acidic. Overall, palatable but that’s it. Drink soon. The acidity will become intolerable in the next year or so.

  • Comment posted by Jake112380:

9/7/2019 12:41:00 AM - Thanks for your note. That’s disappointing to hear. One of the reasons I’ve bought Pepper Bridge in the past is the idea that Jean Francois‘ swine making would allow the wines to age for decades.
