2013 Rhys Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard

Very nervous after pulling cork and having seepage about 75% of the cork...initial worry with a sniff inside the bottle and then poured a glass. The glass is fantastic. Hoping that I don't have to update in another 30-60 minutes that it changed rapidly. Have a handful of these and hoping it is a one-off. The cork was flush so not protruding like the other review. I look forward to these bottles from Rhys and this one hits it all right now, beautiful light gold in color, intoxicating nose, great acidity, just great stuff.

8/18/2018 8:20:00 AM - We saved a little for day 2 and it lost the acid and was flat/flabby. That is not common for me with Rhys. Day 1 was great and given a few other comments I think it may be best to consume these this year and not risk it. High class problem!

Similar in color to previous note but the palate is different. No more sharp acid taking the forefront. This is now really firing for me with that great balance of acid and fruit. I pick up some honey as well as tart citrus and the finish is great. Better now than a year ago. Just Coravin'd a glass to check on this last bottle but think it's time to go grab one more glass....

11/4/2015 9:53:00 AM - Sounds good...I like acid in my Chardonnay as I could just indulge on Grand Cru Chablis all day and be happy but a year ago it was just out of whack. Now it seems great. Really enjoyed that 2nd glass last night too. Will look forward to trying the '13.

A bit of prune on the nose. Very primary fruit with not a lot of acid or tannin so more flabby than I like. It wasn't horrible just not like the outstanding other Turley zins I have enjoyed.

pretty good stuff here but for this price I know I could do better (Myriad, R-M, etc...)

9/22/2014 1:59:00 PM - First of all know that my notes are geared towards my own reference so no mistaking someone who tastes more for a living or may be more consistent.

That said, I expected the Tor to be quite tannic and given the Howell mountain source for fruit I was surprised that it was approachable now without ripping my tongue out. It also had more to it in the nose than the LM (I do like LM too so no hating on LM). I felt that the Tor had more lurking beneath the surface that would improve with age in the bottle.

I didn't get the same feel from the LM so hence my variation in notes.

Hopefully that explains it....or perhaps just made it worse....

I have plenty of other LM in the cellar that I will enjoy as still a fan of LM.

Coravin Pull #1 - 2nd Aubert from 2012 and let me just say that if you drink this immediately after pouring you will get a vastly (and I mean vastly) different wine than if you wait an hour. Initially it is very acidic and masks a lot of the beautiful nuanced layers of fruit. I love a laser-like grand cru chablis but this is just too much acidity for my palate.

An hour of sitting open in the glass and it is beautiful. The acidity has calmed down so much that the wine hardly seems like it was when first poured. For me...this is a mandatory 1 hour decant before drinking or many more years in the bottle.

Very dark in color and opaque. Nose smacks of menthol out of the bottle. One hour into a decant and starting to get the pepper and dark fruit. Very full bodied in the mouth with a rush of acid on the finish. Tannins are still quite present. Why didn't I wait another 2 years to drink this. Score is based on opening now. Wait wait wait. I don't know how this wouldn't be better in 2-4 more years. I still enjoy this but I bet this shines with more time.

First off this is really good stuff. Decanted for about 30 minutes and notes are on first glass. Light purple in color. Nose screams ripe fruit. Fruit (plum, cherry) hits at the very tip of the tongue through mid-palate. This is quite dry and a little dusty. Thirty second finish. I can't wait for glass 2 in another 30 minutes.

Everything the same but dusty is gone. Good stuff.

6/20/2013 8:59:00 PM - I saved 2 glasses for day 2 and still holding strong and similar note. I would agree if I had more than 1 in the cellar I would wait another year before popping but it was my only bottle and curiosity got the better of me. If you are lucky to have 3 or more I would say drink 1 now and 1 each of the next 2 years and compare your notes to see your own age preference. Enjoy this whatever you do...

Obviously a bit of an outlier here, but the overall inpression was one of a nice non-distinct largely generic Pinot Noir. Pretty ruby, floral nose, murky mid-palalte of predominatly red fruits. 12.4% alcohol. Needed more crispness to achieve a greater degree of finesse and elegance.

12/6/2012 9:29:00 PM - I understand your rating but try it again after a couple of hours of decanting and/or after re-corking (I use a vacu-vin). I drank this bottle over 5 days and enjoyed it more each and every day. It absolutely is not complex at this stage but I have really enjoyed it. That said, we all have our preferences and nothing wrong with a little dissension. There are plenty that others love that I find not my liking as much too... I have a couple more of these that i will wait a year each to see how it evolves
